Bring your spooky tales!

Yes, I know it's a wee bit early (and been done before) but I'm impatient, and I love a good spooky story.

The strangest thing that's happened to me would possibly be when we were living in our old house. It was two weeks before we moved, and lots of things in boxes, etc.

I was playing with DS1 on the floor, probably about 16 months old. Suddenly I had the most horrid feeling of absolute dread. The room went ice cold and silent, and I glanced down to DS's face. He was looking directly over my shoulder and horrified; eyes wide, mouth open kind of fear. Then he absolutely screamed.

I confess I was too cowardly to look behind me. Grabbed him in my arms and raced out of the house. DH and neighbours searched everywhere, nothing in sight and never ever felt anything like it again.

I'm not a woo person. I'm not even spiritual, and there probably is a rational explanation but that scared the hell out of me.

So pretty please, spare a moment, drag up a chair, have a nice beverage of your choice and share your spooky tales!

Is it even possible to start a zombie thread?

(See what I did there...)

I must admit, that tickled me. Muttered it quietly to the cat but she just looked at me. 1 out of 2 though, and she's a hard audience. 😂

Our friend and neighbour died under awful circumstances... The night before we moved house he appeared as clear as a real man in my bedroom.. Which had been the last place I ever saw him alive a few months previously..
*def nothing untoward...

That sounds terrifying! Was it a scary moment or did he seem as he did before he passed?

Mines not really that spooky, but last year my old line manager died suddenly, I was (am) still with the same company but just moved departments. I got on great with her and worked with her for a few years. In the week after she died, I was in bed asleep on my side and woke up as if I was completely paralysed and couldn't move at all. I felt a warmth behind me as if I was being hugged in a spooning type position, I forced myself to try and move, and then it went away.

I like to think it was her giving me a hug before she went away to wherever they go.

@GiddyRobin thanks for starting this thread. Love a spooky thread, especially on a Sunday afternoon 👻

Compash · 15/09/2024 16:41

@GiddyRobin that is terrifying! Glad you and your little one got out of there... Was it an old house? Had you had any hints of anything before?

This is going to be a long one.
When my DS was 2, my then BF ,now husband, and I went to the local park. It was mid October but we were having an Indian summer, so warm for this time of year.
We decided to sit away from other people, by some thick hedge, which ran along the park boundaries. The hedge was brown ( important detail) and there were leaves on the ground.
My BF decided to play football with my DS. He had his back to the hedge, about two meters away from it and I sat on the grass, watching them.
Out of nowhere, I noticed a man standing behind my husband. I thought that it was strange because he hadn't walked past me but dismissed it as my BF hadn't realised someone was standing behind him and I had to alert him to the fact.
The man then proceeded to sit very close to me, on the grass. He said nothing.
I felt very uneasy so gathered toddler and BF on the pretext to get an ice cream.
As soon as we started to walk away, I turned round to check where the man was, in case he followed us. There was no one there.
This ,in itself, in not woo. What makes it woo how did this man appears through an hedge ( he didn't walk past me or walk towards me) to stand behind my BF without making a single noise. Toddler and BF were playing quietly and both never heard him either. He was also wearing dark blue overalls and black plimsoles.
One last detail: over the hedge, was the local cemetery. Could he have been a workman, working there? On a Sunday afternoon, wearing plimsoles? His overalls had no writing on it to indicate who he worked for.
Both of us tried to explain what happened but we couldn't. So, as you would lol, we tried to go through the hedge ourselves but couldn't without making a noise and scratching ourselves.
33 years later, this remains a mystery to us.

GiddyRobin · 15/09/2024 17:49

@Auvergne63 Oh now that is very weird! My initial thought would also have been a worker, but with the extra details of the hedge it seems impossible. How odd that he came to sit beside you, too. Can you remember much of his expression?

@Compash It was horrible, I still get goosebumps when I think of it now! It was an old Victorian house in Leeds, right beside the university. I'm not sure if you're familiar with the area, but we were near the English campus which is quite untouched. We never did like it, despite us both loving old houses, but we didn't get a bad vibe? It just felt dark, despite the big bay windows. I did used to get a wee bit of sleep paralysis there, more so than usual, but I put that down to it being quite cold. When DH got a new job we were over the moon, and we both drank a toast to getting out of the gloomy place. Maybe we annoyed it! 😂

@Bluebellsinthewind Me too! I've grabbed a nice bottle of red, and I'm hoping to scare myself silly tonight. 😁

@Healingsfall That sounds both comforting and very spooky! On the one hand I'd say possible sleep paralysis, but on the other with it falling so close to her passing, who knows?! I like the idea of her coming to reassure you.

@GiddyRobin He had a blank expression as far as I can remember. I have just asked my husband about it and he agrees. He also reminded me that the man had pale skin. I had forgotten this detail.
Strangely. this happened in Leeds!

Fescue · 15/09/2024 18:06

@Auvergne63 That reminds me of someone who we used to see in the hedgerow near our local villages. In days of yore we would cycle to the local pubs with a small metal front light and just reflectors on the rear. This was well before the rules of helmets and health and safety. On one road in the middle of nowhere we first spotted a figure in the hedgerow. A tall thin man, standing stock still well back on the verge, illuminated as we cycled by. We would spot him on several occasions on different lanes always standing silently looking out at the road at 11pm or even later. This figure and face in the hedgerow looking out.

Brrrr, there's something about a blank expression that's almost, if not creepier, than an angry one. I am now convinced he had to have been a spook of an ex-cemetery worker!

Maybe Leeds has a high collection of ghosties! Now you mention it, I did have a weird service station experience just outside Leeds.

I went for a wee, it was very late and the service station was partially closed. The KFC was being shut for the night, the weird arcade things closing. Anyway, toilets were empty. I was doing my business and heard the door open.

Footsteps and very heavy breathing, and they came up right beside the block I was in. It sounded like they had some kind of breathing equipment? Anyway, I was very worried as they didn't seem to be doing a wee or anything else, neither did they go to into a cubicle!

I text my husband "HELP", then kicked open the door and legged it. There was no one there - that I saw! DH was outside waiting and said he didn't see anyone either! We rushed off to the car as there wasn't anyone to report it to, but I'm still unsure if it was in my head, a creepy event, or a weirdo lurking around.

I once had an out of body experience which was spooky as hell… but I’ll tell you about that later.

…I once stayed at a hotel with someone I’d recently met. We slept in separate single beds because we’d had a few drinks and after he fell asleep I climbed into the other twin for more room. Woke up during the night to an ice cold body spooning me 😩 …thought bloody hell he’s cold, then had an awful thought that ‘I’m gonna open my eyes and he’s still gonna be lying in the bed opposite me’… opened my eyes and you can guess what happened… he was there, in the other bed 😮😮😮 …the icy cuddle just vanished. Urgh.

For some reason I didn’t even wake him or tell him 🤷🏻‍♀️

RiderOfTheBlue · 15/09/2024 18:16

Trough of Boland, several years ago. Me and DP out for a drive on a winter afternoon. Single track road with passing places and boggy moorland on either side. I saw a car coming towards us over a rise, headlights on. DP saw it at the same time, he called out "car" at the same moment I saw it. So I stopped in a passing place to wait for it. There was a dip in between us and from where we were you couldn't see the bottom of the dip. The car went down the dip, out of sight but didn't reappear. We waited for a while thinking they'd stalled or something. Eventually we thought they must have parked up so we set off down the dip and there was nothing there. Nowhere the car could have gone without us seeing it. Utterly baffling.

MistyMoonlight · 15/09/2024 18:24

Ooh I love these threads! There's a place near me that is described as mountains, but is more of a hill range, scrubby, moorland type land, brilliant views. Lots of burial chambers and hut circles out there. There's a phenomenon known as the "(place name) silence". You can be walking along, not a soul in sight, breeze blowing, birds singing, sun shining and sheep bleating, then suddenly you notice that all noise has stopped, even the breeze, yet you feel cold, and watched, even though you can't see anyone, and you really feel like you shouldn't be there at all, yet can't find it in you to move away... Then suddenly, it's all back as it was. Only experienced it once, but many others have apparently had the same thing, it's a known thing to happen. There's lots of ancient things up that way, not all marked on maps, I wonder if it's passing over an unmarked sacred space or of other significance that causes it?

HashBrownandBeans · 15/09/2024 18:28

We’ve had some weirdness surrounding my teenage DS for a while. He loves the paranormal so hasn’t been scared.
He was up late gaming about 18 months ago and a touch activated light up ball in his room started flashing, so he filmed it. You can hear a Female voice very quietly saying ‘I know you’.
The next day he went to stay at his dad’s, late at night he hears tapping in the hallway, so goes out and snaps a few pictures. In one, there is nothing, in the second, there is a dark haired female staring at him from the bottom of the stairs. You can even see her white blouse and cardigan.

There is a whole other layer to this story involving the suicide of a neighbour, I think it may be them, but it’s quite outing so I will leave it at that.

A few months ago, I called my son from work to make sure he was up for school. He was fumbling about with his mobile so there was a delay between him answering, me saying hello, and him actually speaking to me. In that gap, I heard a woman say “Speaking?” The way some people do on the telephone. I went back to check the date stamp on my sons original video from months earlier, and it was the same date, a year on. Very strange. Someone is trying to speak to us!

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 15/09/2024 18:45

I've had quite a few experiences that make me believe. I was walking home from work and I was on a path that was popular with dog walkers and heard footsteps and a dog panting behind me so I stood aside to let them pass and there was nobody there. Another time I was in a hotel with my young son. He was sharing my bed and asleep and I turned off the light and closed my eyes but then had a feeling to open them again. I did and I saw a woman leaning over the bed looking right at me. I closed my eyes tight, terrified but didn't scream as I didn't want to frighten my son. I opened them again and she was gone. In a house I used to live with my husband I kept having a feeling that things were being rearranged on a shelf in our bedroom. He denied moving stuff. We were sat on the bed together and a bottle of aftershave turned full circle and moved on the shelf. We watched it happen together.

Wow! I would have been terrified.
My husband and I have had other experiences.
We lived in a back to back with a very oppressive atmosphere. The downstair was fine but the main bedroom and bathroom were not.
Many times I have felt someone sitting on the bed when no one was there but me. Our DS ( a baby at the time) would wave at one of the corners of the room on a daily basis and once, a female voice whispered my name whilst I was running a bath.
I was given the opportunity to buy this property at a huge discount but we refused because of the atmosphere. When I ask my grown up DS about the place, he always says that there was something not quite right there.
We moved when he was 11.
I have others but I am pushed for time.

MrsMitford3 · 15/09/2024 18:53

I was living in a flat. (not where I had lived with DH-I moved for work)
My lovely DH had died a few years earlier just before his 29th birthday.
I was lucky enough to meet a lovely man and became engaged.
I was getting ready to move out and in with him and felt very conflicted about some of my things.
They were very much a part of my old life and didn't feel like they "went" in my new life but couldn't bear to leave them behind.
One in particular was a large poster sized print that had hung in our kitchen in our little house and was hanging in my flat.
I was sound asleep-it was 3:00am and I woke to a huge crash.
The poster was on the floor-glass shattered and completely smashed.
There was no one there and nothing else was impacted.
Sort of felt like DH was setting me free from some of the "stuff"

Years ago I was staying in a hotel for 2 weeks on my own. So many weird things happened during my time there.
The house keeping team came in and made my bed etc daily, and one evening i got back to my room and went straight for a bath. When I got out, the bed was unmade like somebody had just got out of it. There was an indent in the pillow like a head.

The TV changed channel once and turned itself off another time. That one was weird because the plug had been turned off at the wall.
