I've had tonsils out a few days ago, pain so bad can't think clearly

Alternating paracetamol and nurofen

Had paracetamol at 6.30am, I can take 2 capsules every 4-6 hours. No more than 8 in 24 hours

Haven't had nurofen yet today, I can take two capsules 3 times a day. No more than 6 in 24 hours

Please could some kind person write out the timing for each so I can set alarms and not miss any, I was worried yday I couldn't remember if I'd had nurofen last or paracetamol last so spent too long without either

It's a rolling 24 hour period. What times did you have painkillers yesterday?

Portfun24 · 15/09/2024 08:53

Aw I got my tonsills out at 17, keep an eye out for infection if its still so sore you cant think straight.

I can work it out, what time do you go to sleep and have you been waking in the night for medication?

Last night before bed I had 2 nurofen, and about 4 hours before that paracetamol

I would take more of what you had at 6.30 at 12, 6, 12 and again when you wake up tomorrow.
I would take the other med at 9, 3 and 9pm.

But I agree that if you're still in so much pain I would get it checked out. It shouldn't be so painful by now.

I try to match ibuprofen to meals as should be taken with food ideally then stagger the paracetamol between them and at bedtime- roughly

8- ibuprofen
10- paracetamol
1- ibuprofen
3pm- paracetamol
6pm- ibuprofen
8-9pm paracetamol

which leaves you a dose of paracetamol to have overnight if needed or at 6am of wakening due to pain

basketofsoftkittens · 15/09/2024 08:58

The idea is you do paracetamol every 6 hours and ibuprofen every 8 hours to manage a 24 hour period.
You then try and ensure the highs and lows of the doses easing does not occur for both medications at the same time. So try and aim for 2-3 hours between taking paracetamol and Ibuprofen.

Can you get some cocodamol from the pharmacy (the 8/500 is over the counter) that would be better than paracetamol. I've had people with morphine after tonsillectomy.

I would go with paracetamol or cocodamol every 6 hours with the ibuprofen in between. You can take up to 600mg 4 times a day of that.(Just checked my BNF app... assuming you don't have any contraindications to the drug) If paracetamol or the milder cocodamol not helping pain then call 111 for more pain killers.

Portfun24 · 15/09/2024 09:01

If you require to take all your meds before bed to cope with the the pain and are sleepinh through, I'd take nurofen now, paracetamol 12, nurofen 2, paracetamol 4, nurofen 6, paracetamol bedtime.

Then you can restart your cycle tomoro at same time again. Try eat your meals with the nurofen.

Thanks all. Day 1-3 were a breeze- I was having paracetamol and every now and then having nurofen. I was eating normally, drinking normally, pottering about the house. They did say day 4-8 is the worst because some membrane comes loose, but I wasn't expecting it to be quite as painful as it is. Day four today, so hopefully it passes quickly.

They gave me codeine for these days, but I don't really want to take them as don't want to be feeling nauseous on top of this.

Appreciate the replies thank you

Mine became infected on around day 3 if I'm remembering correctly so just look out for that.

Lol thanks will do. They said it should hurt at this point so I'm going to assume it's normal. Will see how it goes
