Am I in trouble?

Just returned from dropping DS off at uni and I've realised I didn't pay for my petrol on the way back! I got all flustered in the shop for some reason and only paid for my meal deal, not the fuel. Not even sure which petrol station it was as didn't get a receipt for the food and disposed of all the packaging at the services. How much trouble am I in?

You really don't know where on the journey you stopped for petrol? Work it out, ring them and apologise and pay, ASAP.

Have you got Google maps? You can review your trips to see where you stopped.

Otherwise I would honestly call all of the possible options until you find the right one. I expect that there will be cameras and your details will be passed to the police. It is much better if you can head them off

Did you pay by card? Check your bank account and call them fuel station.

My husband did this once, drove off forgetting that it wasn’t a pay at the pump petrol station. The police turned up at the door to tell us he hadn’t paid a few weeks later. He went along to the petrol station to pay it and that was that. If it makes you feel any better I think it’s quite common, the staff had to work through a big list of unpaid fuel to find the right transaction for my husband to pay. Your number plate will have been captured at the station, always best to try to track them down yourself if you can before the police turn up. I imagine you’ll be able to pay over the phone.

No you're not in trouble. A letter will come in the post asking you to go back and pay or receive a fine. It's no bother.

Happened to me once but I did tell them I had petrol, they just didn't ring it up and I didn't notice as I was paying contactless, not cash. I just didn't listen when they said the amount and assumed it was correct and beeped my card on autopilot.

You'll get a letter soon. It's alright.

Don't panic, think back carefully and work out where it was, then call them.

Thanks everyone, all sorted now. Phew!
