Imessage on Ipad Question

LuluBlakey1 · 14/09/2024 19:45

I have two friends who I imessage- sometimes on my iphone, sometimes on my ipad.

I have no issues with imessage on phone or ipad with people who have an iphone. However, these two friends do not have iphones. If I message from my iphone, it usually works but will not let me send messages that contain emojis or photos or any other 'image' . On my ipad, it often will not send them any message at all- even ones that are just text. Sometimes it does- but seems random. It will not ever send a message with an emoji/image in it.

I have tried every 'fix' I can see on the internet- none work.

Anyone else have this?

Any ideas?

Move to WhatsApp?

Arafon · 14/09/2024 20:06

I think it's something to do with android phones being SMS messages and having to pay for images, these will be the green messages, I find this with DH who has an android phone

Yes, you are right but I don't understand why my ipad will send them text messages on imessage sometimes and then just won't deliver them at all other times-even ones without any images in them.

You shouldn't be able to send them anything text based from your iPad as it doesn't have sms function (imessage is via internet) and they can't receive iMessages on androids.

Arafon · 14/09/2024 22:39

I hadn't noticed it was different on my iPad and iMac and I use both much more than my phone for messages, I never send pictures though

Your messages which are delivered are presumably arriving with them when they are on Wi-Fi, rather than using their phones on 4G/5G, so you are using Wi-Fi and your broadband to send the message at those times and they are received via the same route.

Arafon · 14/09/2024 22:51

When I send messages from home to DH on iPad or iMac, I am always on WiFi and he will be out somewhere always on mobile signal so that is probably why mine always work.

So I have to be on Wifi to send them and they have to be on Wifi to receive them?
If I send them on Wifi and they are on 4G/5G they won't receive them?
Or if I am on 4G when I send them they won't receive them at all? Or only if they are on Wifi?

I don't really understand but are you saying we both have to be on Wifi or both on 4G/5G ? Can't have one on Wifi and one on 4G/5G?

I can't send them anything but text on my iphone - no photos or emoji's.
I can't send text or images on imessage from my ipad- occasionally just text but never images. Often neither.

When I send mine on wifi and DH is on 4g he definitely gets them, we are never both on WiFi.

I’m not at all techy but I know that when I send a message to DH from my iPad on Wi-Fi he won’t receive it on his Android if he’s on 4G out and about. So I am extrapolating from that and adding some logic. You aren’t sending an SMS over the mobile phone network from your iPad, you’re sending an instant message via Wi-Fi; so how would your message suddenly become an SMS in the ether? Logic says that if they arrive some of the time, that must be because your recipient is getting your messages when their device is on WiFi too, so receiving a like for like message over their internet from yours.

I will be very pleased if someone more techy than me can either confirm I’m right, or give the correct explanation!

I send and receive sms texts from my iPad but it’s linked to my phone.

Because your iPad cannot send SMS messages because it’s not on the mobile phone network.

MCBfan · 14/09/2024 23:17

On your iPhone:

Settings > Messages > ensure Send as SMS is turned on

then

Settings > Messages > Send and receive > ensure your email address AND phone number are selected on both your phone and iPad.

Arafon · 14/09/2024 23:19

It's not really going from the iPad though, it's the phone that sends it, it's just forwarded

sarahzbaker · 14/09/2024 23:41

Google
"Can't send text messages to non iPhone users". The solution, using "text forwarding" was suggested by another user, and is an absolutely correct solution. With that option selected, sending text messages to and from the iPad appears as seamlessly as sending them to and from the iPhone, because Verizon, apparently like many cell providers, "blocks" text messages to and from the iPad for reasons known only to it.. You should substitute the word "call" with the word "text", and it should make sense to you. If not, I don't really care.Nice to know that you word police are right on top of everything.

I'm not techy but I send a lot of messages to DH from my iMac and iPad when he is out and he is definitely on mobile signal as he is usually fishing, running or cycling, I have never had a problem with him receiving them or sending messages back, we never send pictures, he has a Motorola phone

Battlerope · 15/09/2024 07:41

Have you got text message forwarding set up on your phone?

LuluBlakey1 · 15/09/2024 07:50

Thanks- had done the second but have now done the first too.

Because your iPad cannot send SMS messages because it’s not on the mobile phone network.

I meant only text, as in not messages containing images of any kind.

I am baffled by the difference between SMS and Imessages and why they don't work the same way.

However, thank you, I have changed a couple of settings and will see what now happens.
