How are you managing Christmas leave this year?

virgocatlover · 14/09/2024 14:42

Christmas falls awkwardly this year. Normal working days 23rd and 24th, Bank holidays Wednesday and Thursday (25th and 26th) normal working day on Friday 27th, then working days on the following Monday and Tuesday before a bank holiday on New Year's Day on the Wednesday.

Usually I take leave between Xmas and new year when it falls nicely with weekends but I'm considering just working all the normal working days this time and taking leave elsewhere.

I am taking the time off between and the 3rd. I'm luck I work for a Scottish company so I'm getting the 2nd off as a bank holiday. I might work up some flex and take Xmas eve off.

Hurdlin · 14/09/2024 14:49

I always take 2 weeks at Christmas, helps we get 4 public holidays in Scotland.

Bunnycat101 · 14/09/2024 15:00

It’s so annoying and I’m sure it has fallen better the last few years. I’m also having a mild panic as won’t have as much leave to cover the week with new year but also not sure how much childcare will be available. Last few years I’ve been able to get holiday camps the week before Christmas itself but cover remainder fairly easily with leave.

I've booked all of the working days off, think I am off for 12 days in total. Can't wait!

Sheknowsaboutme · 14/09/2024 15:16

No idea. We’re considerate to each other so we all have to work X amount. But im happy to work between Christmas and NY. DH has to work too.

Ineffable23 · 14/09/2024 15:20

I would normally just book the Friday when Christmas falls as it does this year, but I have an excess of leave and am not working Fridays currently so planning to take 23rd, 24th, 30th, 31st and 2nd. Means I'll be off for 17 consecutive days while having taken 1.25weeks leave.

Doggymummar · 14/09/2024 15:21

I have two weeks booked off back 6th jan

SaltandPepper22 · 14/09/2024 15:48

I always book off between Xmas and new year but I don’t like to go back until at least the 4th of January on principle. That’s a Saturday this year so I’ll go back on the 6th. My last working day will be the 23rd. In an ideal world I would be off from the Friday but I don’t have enough leave to cover it this year as we have had a lot of holiday. DH will probably have the full 2 weeks off as his company gives them three extra days leave to be used at Christmas, and he gets more leave than me to start with!

devildeepbluesea · 14/09/2024 15:50

Booked off 4 days leave, 2 flex days, we get 1 privilege day, so 2 weeks off and back in on the 6th

gingercat02 · 14/09/2024 15:56

We are only allowed Christmas week or New Year week for cover (NHS). I'm taking NY week as I don't work Tuesday, so I'm off Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day anyway as we are outpatients, so closed Bank Holidays.

gingercat02 · 14/09/2024 15:58

DH takes both weeks, and DS is 16, so no childcare

Rowgtfc72 · 14/09/2024 16:00

We're not allowed to take time off( other than very exceptional circumstances) between the second week in December and the second week in January. We do however all get Christmas day off.
My very important job? I pack frozen fish products.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 14/09/2024 16:02

Always 2 weeks off, so finishing on 20th and back on the 6th

buckleten · 14/09/2024 16:04

We are lucky, our workplace closes over Christmas so last day of work is the 20th, back on the 2nd and we don't need to use any holiday!

Crunchymum · 14/09/2024 16:05

We have to work (we are support staff for EMEA sales and finance and year end is the busiest time of year)

We're a PT team though.

Normal work day on 23rd, hopefully an early finish on 24th but it depends on workload. My colleague will cover the 27th (a day I dont work) I'll do 30th (a day my colleague doesn't work) and we'll both do 31st. I will work 2nd January and get a day back in lieu as Friday is a non working day for me but it's the first day of year end close so I'm expected to work.

I WFH and DP will be off for the festive period so he will have the children.

Beezknees · 14/09/2024 16:07

I'll probably try and book off the 30th and 31st. In my team of 10 only 2 people are allowed to be off at a time though so it has to be divided up fairly over Christmas. It wouldn't be the end of the world if I don't get it, I don't go anywhere for Christmas and I can work from home anyway.

Delphigirl · 14/09/2024 16:10

Stop working on 19th and go back on the 6th. But I have quite a lot of holiday left that I have to use up so that works well for me.

letmego24 · 14/09/2024 16:13

I can't decide between 23/24 and 30/31 won't be able to take both so need to choose!

Delphigirl · 14/09/2024 17:25

@letmego24 i love the few days before Xmas when you are hunkering down, cooking, wrapping etc. by 30/31 Dec I don’t mind going back to work safe in the knowledge it will be very quiet (assuming you don’t work in retail!). So I would take the pre-Xmas days every time.

Fudgetheparrot · 14/09/2024 18:52

Fortunately I don’t work Mondays, so will take off 24th, 27th and 31st then go back on the 2nd and do two days of work before it’s the weekend again.

Am debating taking Friday 20th off as well just so I can have one last day of Christmas prep unencumbered before kids break up

Justploddingonandon · 14/09/2024 18:55

We have to take the time in between and I don't work Mondays or Fridays so it's only really one extra day for me, plus a bit after as school isn't back until the 6th. It does feel like it's fallen badly, but suspect I just feel that as usually at least one of the bank holidays falls on my day off.

QuotetheRaven · 14/09/2024 19:00

It's not awkward at all it's superb!
Having the whole week off so last day 20th, 4pm finish, back on 6th Jan 🤟

Lyricallie · 14/09/2024 19:00

Scotland here so we get the 2nd as a bank holiday which helps and also I get the middle days as privilege days. I was debating taking Christmas Eve off but haven’t decided as I’m saving leave for a holiday in January.

Motheranddaughter · 14/09/2024 19:01

I always work between Christmas and New Year ,i find it too long otherwise
Will stop on the friday before as hosting on Christmas day for 14

Bringautumnnights · 14/09/2024 19:07

I conveniently got pregnant so off on maternity from the 1st Dec 25 to the 5th Jan 26.
Next 2 Christmas's sorted 😅 I'll worry about the rest when I get there.
