interested to hear about peoples experiences of starting fluoxetine. My 17 year old is due to start Monday. Not sure what to expect with the first couple of weeks and months. Thanks

Felt a bit headachy at times, to start. This wore off after a few days though

PoshTosh · 14/09/2024 13:54

Thank you

No side effects here other than a bit of acid reflux.

Absolutely dreadful acid reflux. Involuntary grimacing.
I was prescribed it for pain but I gave up after a few months.

LightSpeeds · 14/09/2024 13:59

I'm off them now but after several years of moderate to severe anxiety, depression, etc., I was literally back to a semblance of normal within 4 days. It was like a miracle (although I appreciate this is probably on the unusual end of responses to ADs). They actually saved my life.

LightSpeeds · 14/09/2024 13:59

Oh, and no side-effects with these.

SlatternIsMyMiddleName · 14/09/2024 14:04

Sorrry, I can’t remember the specifics of going on it other than felt a bit grim at times. But longterm it was totally worth it. I got my life back.

I was exhausted for the first week, but no real side effects since. It has really helped me. I've had some very difficult things happen since I started on the fluoxetine, and I simply wouldn't have been able to cope before. Now, those things still make me unhappy, but only to a normal extent. I rarely get physical symptoms of anxiety (shaking hands, racing heart etc) now.

It took about 2 weeks for me to feel it was helping, and 6 weeks to start to feel the full effect, but I'm glad I started taking it.

Keep a close eye on increased low mood and suicidal thoughts for the first few weeks.
It will hopefully pass after the initial period.
Fluoxteine didn't work for my DD but several people have found it helpful.
She is better on sertraline.

AfraidToRun · 14/09/2024 14:14

Acid reflux was unbearable for me, so I used to take with food/lots of water and it was much better.

It does take time to work and for me it took a little longer than normal.

Back21970 · 14/09/2024 14:16

No side effects at all for me and worked very quickly, 3 or 4 days.

Originally I was prescribed Sertraline and it made me really tired so I went back to the doctors and they switched.

Lifesaver for me too - good luck x

WeAreWhereWeAre · 14/09/2024 14:17

My DD1 was prescribed this at 17. At first it made her very tired and supressed her appetite. It passed in 2/3 weeks though.

urghhh47 · 14/09/2024 14:35

First time I took it I was fine except for low platelet levels which gave me regular nose bleeds. Second time I took it, it killed my ability to orgasm totally and affected my libido. I came off them when I no longer thought I was getting the improved mood benefits but the side effect had continued.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 14/09/2024 14:46

No side effects for me

PoshTosh · 14/09/2024 16:50

I felt spaced out and asked to change medication. I had young children at the time and didn’t feel safe looking after them

Releasethebat · 15/09/2024 00:16

I went on this when I was 14. It did literally nothing to me. After several months I was taken off it and switched to something else.

Releasethebat · 15/09/2024 00:17

I should add, I went on to be diagnosed with treatment resistant depression.

PoshTosh · 15/09/2024 20:22

Made me totally manic - awful - really didn’t suit me .

my son - saved his life as lifted him from depression.

meds affect everyone differently.

famcynags · 15/09/2024 21:11

Been on it for 25 years, has breaks which weren't good and I know I'm good on 40 mg

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 15/09/2024 21:38

I had severe nausea and suicidal thoughts 🫤 think I'm in the minority though.

My advice would be to start on a low dose to check tolerance first.

RegrettingLostTime · 15/09/2024 22:45

Best thing i ever did.

Citalopram increased my anxiety ten fold and i was bouncing off the walls on no sleep

Sertraline did minimal but i had bad side effects on it; persevered until i could cope with life and the side effects outweighed the benefits.

Had a really awful 3-4 years but was reluctant to go back on anything... advised to try fluoxetine and an absolute game changer.
