what can I do about these nuisance calls?

A couple of days ago I answered a call from a UK mobile number (I'm in the UK), and it was some sort of financial planning company asking about my investments, clearly about to try to sell me something. I wasn't in the mood, and did what I often do which is to ask him to hold for a moment, and I muted my end and just continued with what I was doing. After a couple of minutes he started calling my name to see if I was still there. I answered and said yes, but that I'm busy, and can't speak and please don't remove me from the list. He started swearing at me repeatedly, a lot, and then hung up. I then received a couple more calls from mobile numbers I don't know, and I didn't answer them. Today I've had more calls, all from diff mob numbers, and just now I answered one, and I could hear it was the same person... he started to say my name, it was definitely him, and I just hung up and blocked. Then I received another mob number calling. How can I stop this or what should I do? I don't want to speak to him and ask him to stop calling as he was being v rude and abusive after I kept him waiting. I guess I shouldn't have messed with him and should have just said no thank you in the first place, but I didn't. Any ideas? Or shall I just ignore all mobile numbers I don't know, and eventually he'll stop trying?

I block specific numbers and report them to my network as spam.

I also block private numbers. However when I am expecting a call from my GP that morning/afternoon I unblock private numbers until after the call.

I have an android handset.

Oh and I am on the TPS.

I used to get lots of calls dropped once I stated that.

Contact Action fraud online or give them a call asap

I'm registered with the TPS. Will the network take any notice if they are all just diff mobile numbers? I keep blocking them - I put them into WhatsApp to see if it is someone I know and there are never photos...

Can you set your phone only to allow your contacts to get through - usually an option on 'do not disturb'?

I think you're right, it's best just to hang up when you get a call like this. Don'y make yourself memorable to them.

SaffronsMadAboutMe · 13/09/2024 17:12

Just hang up and block.

Playing immature games will only get you more phone calls.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 13/09/2024 17:14

I don't answer unknown numbers. They'll leave a message if important.

Bearpawk · 13/09/2024 17:16

Did you tell them 'please don't remove me from the list' or was that a typo?
If so, you told them to keep your number on the call list but you're cross they keep calling you?

DadJoke · 13/09/2024 17:17

Just answer the call, say if it’s a sales call, hang up and block. If you engage at all they are more likely to call you again.

I use a screen calling service. 9 times out of 10 they hang up.

uniformjoys · 13/09/2024 17:29

Just to say that our local hospital calls from a private number, and won't leave a message. They once had to try several times to get hold of me, but they did at least manage it eventually.....

I don't know what this is - is it when they say that this number isn't a contact so I won't accept the call and they have to say the name? I'll google it, thank you.

I use Apple's block all unknown numbers, Android probably has similar. I put a name on any number that may ring me like the dentist, hairdresser and garage, anyone else can just text, voicemail or just not get hold of me.
