He's appeared in court. The charges are controlling and coercive behaviour, emotional abuse and physical abuse. The charges relate to his estranged wife.

God almighty, what next BBC?

Can I ask a question, as someone who has been in this situation but is also Autistic?

Those saying they got bad vibes or didn't like JB and are unsurprised he's been charged with domestic abuse - can you describe what you mean?

I'm asking as I've been on my own for a long time as I'm continuing a process of learning about red flags/my own history and how it's affected me.

I've done Freedom Programme, read Lundy Bancroft, did work with Women's Aid and can see where the red flags were in my own relationships.

But I didn't get a single bad feeling about JB - he seemed really nice (which I realise is the role of people on TV - being 'professionally nice' is his job, of course).

Just really curious.

I'm autistic and i take everything at face value - i can pick up vibes in person through body language but on tv i find it very hard to pick up unless it's very obvious such as jimmy savile.

@MrsToddsShortcut it was from my experience with my ex. He appeared so nice and normal, mostly to other people, anyone who he thought of as important or who were paying him attention, but not so much to me. Life and soul of the party, great guy, all that shit. It was quite a shock to realise just how abusive he had been throughout our relationship (and how I had been conditioned to accept it, even the obvious stuff). I then started looking at people on telly who I had thought were lovely, without doubt, and realised I should have some doubt. No-one knows an abuser like their victim.

Also his programme about his dyslexia, I was already doubting him by this time and the victimhood stood out for me.

I no longer blindly trust, which is probably a good thing but it's also bloody sad.

i am a fan of the repair shop. but have never seen the point of him. the other people (who actually do stuff) often do the meet and greet. so can't see why it should affect the programme going forward.

Thank you. No, I don't blindly trust either but I have also avoided meeting anyone new, which is a shame. I'd like to get to that point.

I hope I'm in a much much better position now to spot red flags if I was seeing someone, or interacting with someone in my life, but I've never got a negative feeling about a celebrity or TV personality.

I do remember feeling very disappointed by Alan Carr when Justin Lee Collins was accused/convicted of DA. He did an interview all about how wonderful JLC was, and how he'd never seen any evidence of any abuse and JLC had never been anything but lovely.

I remember thinking 'well, of course you've never seen any evidence of it - you're part of his cover story'.

Yeah, the number of people who say they can't believe such and such did such and such as they'd never experienced it from them. Well no, you wouldn't.

Good luck with finding someone if that's for you @MrsToddsShortcut . It's good that you are doing the groundwork to hopefully avoid any bad 'uns, but never forget they are generally very good at what they do so keep your eyes open. Meantime, enjoy the tranquility Flowers

Just goes to show doesn't it? That a bloke can seem really nice, but we just don't know what's really going on.

Bluevelvetsofa · 14/09/2024 18:23

I agree with @Samcro. He doesn’t actually do any restoration on the show, just walks around chatting. Some of the proper experts are perfectly able to do the introductions- Dominic Chinea, Will Kirk and the art conservator are used to fronting various parts of the programme.

Apparently there is a Repair Shop Live Tour scheduled for next year with Jay Blades as a presenter.

Can't imagine it will go ahead with him as a frontman now. ( I'm with other pps though, he never added much to the programme just sometimes walked around wearing a brand new work apron that had never seen any work!)
