Do you know what your walk looks like?

For some bizarre reason my husband and I were talking about different walking gaits and realised we’d never really seen what we look like walking from point A to point B, from the perspective of other people. So we filmed each other and watched it. I look like an absolute spectacle. Yes we were bored but it was pretty funny. I wonder how many people are unaware of what their walk looks like from an outside perspective (for example, other than seeing yourself walking in a reflection).

I have overpronation in my ankles, and I'm very clumsy. I also can't walk in a straight line.

I learned 2 of these things in a gait analysis foe orthotics. Figured the clumsy one out a long time ago.

forevernumb · 13/09/2024 14:28

I never look at my Ring camera because of this 😂😂😂

TheSandgroper · 13/09/2024 14:44

I’m fairly sure my gait has developed into something similar to what my mothers was. But we have a few differences in bone structure so possibly I’m wrong and I can’t check now.

ForPearlViper · 13/09/2024 14:51

I had a foot problem at the same time as a colleage and we both had gait analysis via NHS podiatry, but in different areas. He had a super scientific computerised thing. I had to walk up and down the corridor in the Health Centre in a pair of shorts, in front of a bemused group of people waiting for the ante-natal clinic, whilst watched by the NHS podiatrist.

She effectively said I walked like a cart horse, it was no wonder I got a bad back and if I was overweight I'd be in a wheelchair by the time I was 60. Thankfully that hasn't come to pass and the orthotic insoles and steroid injections have made all the difference!

I have all sorts of spine and shoulder issues and just general posture issues, which have been filmed for PT so I know I walk shuffle around looking like I should be ringing the bells at Notre Dame

BrieHugger · 13/09/2024 14:58

My mum told me as a teenager I walk like I’m wearing wellies. Don’t think I’m that bad now but I’m pretty sure I don’t have a graceful gait. Poised and polished I am not.

Funny how you can identify someone from how they walk, I can spot friends a mile off if they’re ahead of me up the street.

BoobyDazzler · 13/09/2024 14:59

Well I have legs shorter than most people, despite being of average height, and I somehow manage to walk faster than most people. DH says I march everywhere! I’m usually looking at the floor looking for interesting thing too 🤣

I can imagine it isn’t elegant or graceful 🤣

Blarn · 13/09/2024 15:04

I have a very bouncy walk. I've always walked on my toes, less now and had orthotic insoles in my teens which corrected my gait a lot. Still bounce on my toes slightly and my right leg swings in a bit of a circle instead of going forward. Causes wider legged trousers to flap with it! It's why I don't wear my pass at work as well, it bouces up and down, swings of my chest and hits my tummy!

AuntieDolly · 13/09/2024 15:08

I walk like a Womble! Hate seeing it in my Ring videos

Spenditlikebeckham · 13/09/2024 15:09

Not watched myself but I can recognise several of my dc from quite a distance by their walk...

Natsku · 13/09/2024 15:25

Fast, and I swing my arms a lot. I walked past a teacher once, turned back and saw him mimicking my walk (this was recently, not when I was a child, that would have been cruel!).

ObliviousCoalmine · 13/09/2024 15:57

I do ever since I got a doorbell cam. I regret ever looking at it now.

Normallynumb · 13/09/2024 16:39

I have moderate CP on my left side so I am self conscious of my gait and posture!
I avoid floor length mirrors and looking at my reflection In shop windows.
Absolutely nothing I can do about it though!

Everintroverte · 13/09/2024 16:47

Yes, I hate it.
I walk a bit like a duck with my bum sticking out and swing my arms rather a lot for some reason. I saw an osteopath for a back injury a few years ago and she suggested consciously tilting my pelvis the other way, but if I do that when walking I feel like Im not walking properly and must look like a puppet on strings.

LadyQuackBeth · 13/09/2024 19:21

I do a kind of scamper - I know as my dog very kindly runs up to people who she mistakes for me or DH. I can completely understand her running up to talk, skinny, kind of lollop-ing men, so I have to take the short, chubby scamper as my equivalent 😭

typicaltuesdaynight · 13/09/2024 19:22

I've got hyper mobility I walk on my toes and bounce my eldest ds walks the same as my youngest has luckily escaped this walk

somereallyniceadvice · 13/09/2024 19:22

I know mine, husband recently told me. I come down the choir like a swan freeing her big tits out and waving her hair

My back is nice and straight with shoulders back but my feet turn out like a penguin and my bum wiggles/jiggles far too much 😂

I bounce - lots of people have told me I have a very distinctive walk!

VeronicaCreepcheese · 13/09/2024 19:39

I don't move much - apparently, I sort of glide. My arms don't swing a lot. It's mostly down to intense self consciousness.

hexsnidgett · 13/09/2024 19:45

Not sure I want to know, my self esteem just couldn't take it.
Dh and the dc all walk the same- head down and fast stomp!Smile

Cherrysoup · 13/09/2024 19:50

I look about 100. 😢 I walk incredibly stiffly, possibly due to the accident I had years ago. I walk past massive floor to ceiling on the way into work and we have a camera on our drive which we looked at the other day. Bloody awful, frankly.

Apparently I walk way too fast, with my neck sticking out like it's in a hurry. Then I catch myself and try to straighten up but just end up walking too rigid, too fast.

scrivette · 13/09/2024 20:33

I walk like a ballet dancer apparently - except nowadays it's far quicker as I am always in a rush. My Nana used to see if I could walk around her house with books on my head so that's probably why!
