A travel insurance condundrum

DH has a big birthday coming up, and I've booked us a cruise - which will be a surprise for him. It's much more extravagant than our usual holidays, so I'm hoping it'll be really special.

My parents have kindly offered to look after our children (12 and 8) for the week we are away. However, whilst my parents are currently in excellent health, I do worry a little that something might happen that means they're unable to babysit. They are getting to that age where most of their friends have serious medical issues of some sort or another (mid 70s).

I've checked my travel insurance and understandably it doesn't mention childcare as something it would cover. Has anyone else been through this - and if so, what do you do? Just hope for the best?!

Could you arrange a back up with school friends in the event that something does happen that means both of your parents are unable to look after the kids?

Have a plan B. Ie. Someone who can step in if needed.

I have to say, my DPs are the same age and I wouldn't even worry that they wouldn't be able to do this especially with older children too. Do you have a back up plan? Family friend or aunts/uncles who could step in if needed?

Thanks all. No other family in this country, but we do have school mum friends who I might be able to ask in an emergency. It would be a massive ask though!

It is a big ask but I'd do it for either of my kids friends so you never know!
