Yarn

Hello. I always knit with acrylic as it's all I can afford. I want to crochet mittens for a few friends and I want to use decent wool that can be washed in the washing machine and will be long lasting. I'd be grateful for some specific recommendations for yarn and where to get it online. Thanks!

No knitters or hookers here?

Try The Wool warehouse. Sells all the brands.

I save up and buy nice wool, I'd rather one thing in nice wool than five in acrylic

I only buy nice wool on sale, because of the cost. If you can invest some time into stalking some online wool shops you save a lot by buying in the sales.
For mittens and scarves, I like to use West Yorkshire Spinners.

Drops yarn is pretty good value. I get it from Wool Warehouse. I really like the cotton merino mix although this might not be right for mittens. The Big Merino would be good for this I think.

I buy Drops Superwash from Wool Warehouse. Reasonably priced and it's lovely. Usually buy the Merino.

Sock yarn (wool/nylon blended 4ply) is great for mittens and gloves, super hard wearing as well as warm and easy to care for.

I quite like Berroco Vintage yarn (on the LoveCrafts UK website). It’s part wool/part synthetic and washable - quite soft and comes in many beautiful colours. I’ve knitted mittens with it before and really like them. It does come as a skein though so I wind it into a ball first.
