Hey all
My 2016 iphone is no longer coping, though it can make calls. It's been a good 8 years 😂

I'm aware that a new iphone is out tomorrow.

I will just buy an old iphone but my thinking is that the price of a 12 is likely to go down next week? Or is that unlikely as I'm looking at what's now considered an old phone?

It would be much more convenient to sort this out this weekend - but if it means missing a £100 saving or something, I can wait.

Any thoughts - do the older phones stay the same price as they're so old?

Thanks.

Firstly, the 12 has a really bad reputation, so I'd avoid that.

usually the models down do drop in price, personally I'd wait until the 16 is readily available.

But hopefully an obsessive iPhone follower will be along soon to help you!!

Rocknrollstar · 12/09/2024 12:45

The 16 in the UK won’t be able to do all that has been advertised. Personally I’d look for a refurbished 13 or 14 on We Buy Music or similar.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 12/09/2024 13:04

I have had a 12 since it came out. Nothing wrong with it.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/09/2024 13:06

@Just4thisthreadtoday What's the issue with the 12 please?

I just need a phone that will be okay to run Whatsapp and Uber as well as make calls, and can cope whatever update is coming out on Monday.

I'm disappointed I couldn't find anything cheaper but must admit I haven't looked at refurbs.

I can't imagine a planet where a 16 would be in budget...give it 8 years maybe.

I'm a total ignoramus though but even if a 16 comes down in price, I don't want a phone that I'm nervous of being nicked.

I've had iPhones for years and honestly when this one goes I'm switching back to android. iPhones are so expensive and are pretty shit compared to say Samsung

Can you explain? I'm thinking about upgrading myself but I don't want something that doesn't do what it says

BashfulClam · 12/09/2024 13:24

Had a 12 for 5 years and was perfect. Now have a 15 pro.

I’d rather shit in my hands and clap than go back to android 😂

nightowlerine · 12/09/2024 13:32

@fizzymizzy it's just the new AI features that won't be available straight away. The only phones that will support it is the new 16s or the 15 pro models. If you aren't bothered about the additional AI features I think a 13, 14 or 15 would be good option, depending on what phone you have at the moment.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/09/2024 13:32

I got myself in a muddle

I was looking at 13. That was the suggestion made by EE when I called about an upgrade. Not worth paying their price but they are about £500 to buy and I’d just use my current SIM deal.

now looking at 12 but that seems to be all refurbs… but is about £250 which is more what I was hoping for.

I do sync with an iPad for emails and photos but was really just hoping not to spend a lot.

battery life is important as well.

so I’ll think it over till next week I guess in case of any price changes.

Depends on your budget of course but are you aware Apple Store do 2 years interest free credit on brand new phones and offer trade ins. As long as the phone appears to be functioning and turns on and off they don’t check any further. My iPhone SE was on its last legs earlier this year, sometimes refusing to charge and randomly turning itself off.

They gave me £80 trade in against a 14 and I’m paying it at £25 month interest free. They might have old stock of 13 and offer you a good deal. I have a lebara 99p a month sim only no contract deal with 15Gb and unlimited mins and texts with 100 international mins.

Christmasdreaming · 12/09/2024 13:52

Apple do interest free credit on their phones if you buy direct including some of their older models

have a look at the 2022 se, avoid the 2020 model

I’ve had the 12 since it launched and it’s perfect, zero issues. Same as pretty much every iPhone I’ve had before that 🤷‍♀️

BearSoFair · 12/09/2024 14:52

I had an 11 Pro (great, wish I'd never 'upgraded' it) then a 13 Pro (shit: 2.5hrs screen time and I'd be down to 30% battery) and just swapped back to Android last month. The 11 Pro was a dream for me and if I was going back to Apple I'd happily buy that again rather than the newer ones!

EmeraldRoulette · 12/09/2024 14:52

Thanks guys, I’m literally just after the cheapest iPhone that I can pay upfront and will cope with ios18 which I think is due Monday.

@BearSoFair thank you, battery power is a big factor for me. I would’ve looked at 11 but I hear it will have the same problem as mine very soon? Too old to run certain apps? Uber literally won’t let me use it now.

let’s hope mum doesn’t have a middle of the night emergency when the mini cabs are closed 😱

Not having changed my phone for so long I have realised I don’t know if my SIM card contacts will transfer or if I have to do that all again.

I love my iPhone 12 and I've never had a problem with it. Ditto my husband. Both of us bought them second hand from iOutlet but you wouldn't have known they had been used, I would never have thought I'd buy a used phone but glad I did. It came with iOutlet's 12 month warranty.

Kapalika · 12/09/2024 15:44

We buy refurbed iPhones from Backmarket. Never had a problem.

Andylion · 12/09/2024 15:56

OP, I know very little about phones but you asked specifically what’s wrong with iPhone12 and in a later post mentioned that battery life is important to you.

Just after I had bought my 12, (I was shopping for a case), the salesman told me that 12 had crap battery. In 2 years I never found that to be an issue. The only reason I upgraded to a 15 a couple of weeks ago is that I had foolishly bought a 12 mini, and now I need a bigger screen.

Solymoly · 12/09/2024 15:56

Definitely wait until the 16 is available as there will be more trade ins on the second hand market and the new ones of the other models will drop in price

DixonD · 12/09/2024 17:04

Same here. Got a 12 Pro Max and love it so never upgraded it.

Boomer55 · 12/09/2024 17:09

The iPhone 15 has already dropped in price locally, ready for the 16 due to be available tomorrow.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/09/2024 18:54

thanks everyone

I will hold off for a week or so, if the effect is that quick?
life.

is it safe to assume I can put a passcode on any of them, rather than use facial recognition or fingerprint?

the reason I’m looking for an older one is I suspect that will be more convenient for me than something with a ton of features that I’ll never use.

@Andylion that’s interesting. Any tech it doesn’t seem to be true what anyone says about battery

I've just upgraded from an iPhone 13 mini to a refurbished 15. I got it through GiffGaff on 24 months interest free credit. For some reason Apple (Barclays Finance) declined me even though I bought my 13 that was last time. My 13 was fine, the only reason I upgraded was because I use my phone for work social media a lot and I needed a better camera.
