Marking 23 years since the collapse of the Twin Towers at the World Trade Centre in NYC.
This has some personal significance to us as now DH, then fiancé was due to fly out on the Friday before but couldn't due to not having the requisite number of months left on his passport by a matter of days...
Still feel queasy thinking about it 😥

5 year old Harold Whittles, who was born deaf, his little face captured at the actual moment he hears sound for the very first time...

Gosh this has resonated with me.
My ds2 Wilf has just got blue tooth hearing aids and can hear so much more now.
Its been some what of a shock for him in some ways. He went to see my Mum's friend and was sat at her feet when the clock struck. It frightened poor Wilf who was clutching his ears and curled up in a ball on the floor which in turn alarmed Mum's friend. Not only was the clock striking... It struck 12 o clock!!!!

I came on to say exactly this. The picture haunted me for ages afterwards. Sadly if you Google about this you will find hundreds of other photos of dead babies, abandoned and dead in gutters and rivers and elsewhere in China, some for being girls and others as a consequence of their "one child" policy.

I saw possibly the same photo , a baby at the side of the road , in the gutter and a man walking by .
Heartbreaking Sad

Him. It was a little boy (who survived) I've just found out. Journalists aren't allowed to interfere only observe. This picture wasn't the only reason for his suicide

The little boy survived this famine but sadly died later of a fever.

Apologies if this one has already been shared, but the aftermath of Chernobyl. Also the abandoned pictures of Pripyat, especially the ferris wheel.

Edited to say I tried to post a photo but it didn’t work.

A soldier kissing a nurse in Times Square on VJ Day

A guard escaping over the newly built Berlin Wall in 1961

The VJ photo is a really good example of our interpretations v's the reality. The woman said that she didn't consent to the kiss, and it was unwanted. It looks like a joyful celebration but it's basically a picture of a woman being assaulted

Picasso's 'Guernica' painting.

For me it is this picture. We adopted our son the same year and his birth father was Syrian.
It made me feel sick and still does to think of the pain of the family in their last moments.
Just awful.
This is a fascinating but incredibly sobering thread. Thank you @DebbieTheCat for starting it.

What is the man in the drain photo?

@Absoloo Absoloo

A man (in the 2007 UK floods) got sucked into a drain whilst wading through the floodwater, and his leg got trapped. Rescuers tried to get him out, (even getting into the drain themselves to try to free him.) With the power of the water, and how tight his leg was stuck, it was an impossible task, and the water engulfed him and he drowned.

It was shown live on TV (as the TV cameras were covering flood stories,) and this man's family had to see him drown, right in front of their eyes.

His name was Michael Barnett and he was only 28. As I said earlier in the thread, you can see the fear and desperation etched on his face. I saw it live too, and can never unsee the image. As it says on the link there is DISTRESSING CONTENT!
