To say Waitrose should stock British apples in their peak season (now)?

I wanted to buy apples as a part of my Waitrose shop at the weekend only to only find apples from far-flung places such as New Zealand, Chile etc., none from the UK at all.

Now is the peak season for British apples; AIBU to find it ridiculous that they didn't have delicious English apples in stock and instead had produce from across the globe? And why is this the case, anyway? 🤔

I'm checking Ocado now hang on

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/09/2024 13:31

Try Aldi. It’s. British seasonal apples are lovely and much cheaper than Waitrose.

Loads on Ocado thank goodness! Is it online or in store Waitrose?

This was mentioned a couple of weeks ago too

I agree

amoreoamicizia · 11/09/2024 13:33

I think M&S partner with Ocado now, don't they?

Ocado aren't in my area, thanks for the info though. I will order from Riverford, it's just I didn't have a box this week.

Morrisons has some excellent ones, including Worcester dessert apples (they smell amazing).

Lidl has great Victoria plums too, very low price.

There are Waitrose Best of British in the store I work in, plus plenty of bags of Essential Seasonal Apples from the UK.

We had a rather angry thread about this about a week ago, where the OP refused to acknowledge any replies. The same comments apply here:

It's not quite peak season yet

It is normally possible to find British apple varieties in British supermarkets for most of the year

Thanks, I did ask an assistant and we had a thorough check but nothing in my store. I'll have a look next time I'm in a different location, though.

Thanks, while we are discussing seasonal fruit I've had some amazing figs recently (Riverford, but I saw them in Lidl yesterday). 😍

I think it's a little early? Agree there's no reason to just have them from far-flung places.

I do wish there was a native apple that's crispy instead of soft, does anyone know of one?

NoShirtNoShoesNoSheldon · 11/09/2024 14:07

None of my apple trees have apples that are ready yet, I think the weather has affected the availability.

@Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright I like Smitten, which is sold in Waitrose and M&S. Very crisp, it's a variation on a Braeburn, but nicer. They don't always have them in every store and I haven't seen any of this year's crop yet. I also once had some delicious crisp golden apples (can't recall the variety) grown in Herefordshire, bought in Waitrose.

@Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright Crimson Crisp, Riverford have them or Waitrose did too last year at the end of the season.

Thank you both @Papyrophile and @amoreoamicizia, I'm definitely going to try and find these 👀
