Holiday with toddler

Is this normal? I feel like a shit mum I don’t know

DS is 2.5 this is his 3rd holiday and this time he’s cautious the pool is so cold so he won’t go in after trying and realising how freezing it is. Won’t do the slides as they’re freezing too

os it normal ? To be apprehensive I feel like he just avoids the pool but loads of kids want to go in

does that kick in as they’re older ? The wanting to stay in the pool all day and play etc

hes running around playing but wiped as it’s so hot and he wants to play do actives but it’s so hot

Toddlers are the most irrational group of people I’ve ever dealt with. There’s no rhyme or reason to what they will or won’t like. It has absolutely no connection to how good you are as a mum.

Rather than let him test the water, could you carry him in, then cuddle him as you go down into the water together?

Kids are different. One I know, older, gets cold really easily - so he's not a fan of most swimming pools because the water isn't as warm as he'd like. And getting out of a pool he's shivering and whiny and miserable instantly. He will do it for a fun inflatable at a pool session or somewhere with slides, but there's a struggle around it.

Are you abroad somewhere hot and sunny, where there's a bit of cold feeling shock initially but you quickly adapt and it's refreshing? Or is it somewhere cooler, and it's overcast and breezy, and the pool just isn't that comfortable?

So we tried the indoor pool and he did this it was warmer and had a ramp for us to walk into! He was loads better tried swimming had fun

we may try him with swimming lessons when home it’s been hard we had a baby 5months ago so feel so chaotic and our youngest is quite clingy so it’s been hard but we want to focus on helping his confidence

i felt guilty because we hadnt done swim lessons pre holiday it’s just been hard juggling the two kids

but maybe when more confident he’ll love it more

its 30 degrees so quite warm! Sun only drops now and then but overall it’s really sunny so unsure how the pool is so cold! D

I don’t think the pool is very fun for a 2 year old. They can’t swim.

At that age, holidays with days out broken up by food and playgrounds worked better. I think you just need to adjust your expectations.

coxesorangepippin · 11/09/2024 13:34

Just go with the flow and lower your expectations

MrsSkylerWhite · 11/09/2024 13:35

I wouldn’t fancy getting into a cold outside pool either.
Glad he enjoyed the indoor one.

TheShellBeach · 11/09/2024 13:57

That's just toddlers for you! They're really irrational.

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 11/09/2024 13:58

Could you buy a cheap blow up paddling pool? It'll be refreshing for him without being freezing.

Changeiscomingthisyear · 11/09/2024 14:11

My youngst would avoid them. She adores swimming and completed stage 2 before she was 5 but she can’t stand being cold.

Sounds like he needs warmer water and go to go to the pool regularly.

loopeysue · 11/09/2024 14:25

Toddlers are all different. My 2yo loved the pool on holiday, she went every morning. She wouldn't stay in all day though as she needed to stop for lunch and nap. It was a warm indoor pool, but we put her in an insulated wetsuit as she gets cold easily. She's been swimming twice a week since she was 4 months.

penguinbiscuits · 11/09/2024 14:43

We have a pool and my 2 year old never goes in it, maybe 3 times a year. We live in a warm climate.

Would YOU swim in the pool every day? Prob not Smile your child is the same. They can't swim either.
