Ive got to sort myself out

Changed my username. Help me please!

been to the GP recently and ive been told via text message that my cholesterol is high and i need to go onto a statin. Im also overweight, im ashamed to admit that my BMI is 36. Im 5ft8in and around 17.4 stones. Im also currently in the middle of doing a week of taking my blood pressure as thats also slightly high.

i will freely admit i eat so badly. Like skip meals, i do eat fruit and veg and like them, but i have little interest in cooking, prefer eating!!! I also outweigh the good foods with lots of shit eg crisps, chocolate, ice cream, cheesy chips and freezer crap. I don’t exercise much and have a desk job. I tend to drink lots of water and rarely sugery drinks. I do drink a lot of coffee ~8 cups a day..

surely if im on the verge of having a stroke/heart attack the surgery would have called me not text. Im seeing this as a wake up call. Can i sort this without taking medication??!? Is there any hope for me? 😩 im fired up and need a plan to take action. I want to be around for my kids 🥹

You don't have to go on a statin - if you improve your diet and lose weight then cholesterol (and overall heart disease risk) will probably come down.

It would be reasonable to decline for now, get stuck into healthier eating (fewer carbs, smaller portions, fewer snacks) & repeat bloods in six months.

You can always start the statins AND take measures around your diet as that will benefit absolutely everything in your physical and mental health. Go for it and strike while the iron’s hot. Maybe start by eating good food and half filling every plate with veg , cut out the crap and take a walk each day. Good luck.

So do you know if i can reverse this? Lower my cholesterol, lower my blood pressure?? If i went on statins, are they easy to come off? Or should i say, ill give it six months clean eating/exercise and then retest? Is that an option?

i find it bizarre the GP has not even called me and just sent a text?

my plan is to cut out the crap foods, really be mindful what im sticking in my mouth. Lots more salad/fruit/veg. Checking saturated fats etc on foods. Im going to do a 30 minute walk on my lunch break and add in a podcast series.

this has really given me a kick up the arse.

any other tips/advice welcome

Yes my BIL was put on statins in his 40s. It gave him a shock and he gave up smoking. His cholesterol came right down and he came off the statins and has kept the right sight of 5 . I’m not a medically trained person but I would think that if you are several stone overweight, just losing that is bound to benefit your blood pressure and cholesterol. Don’t be too drastic. Just eat good food, half your plate being veg and cut out the crap. Regular walking is great for blood pressure and every aspect of health.
