Car problems!

Hi everyone, just looking for a bit of advice. We purchased a second hand car at the end of march from a well known local dealer and took out extended warranty. It’s a 16 plate diesel Vauxhall insignia. In the first month the check engine light came on twice and it was in the garage both times to get sorted. Last week the light came on yet again so we’ve taken it back to the garage and they’ve advised it needs a new part due to carbon build up and it won’t be covered under warranty despite having the car less than 6 months. They’ve said £1500 to repair. The mechanic just told us if you want a car with no repairs buy new and shrugged. Does anyone know where we stand with this? I think having a car less than 6 months and 3 trips to the garage is excessive even if the car is second hand but admittedly I’m not very clued up on cars!
