Getting my shit together.

Ok so I really struggle with personal admin (possible ASD, maybe ADHD, waiting on diagnosis) and I have decided it's time to get my shit together. I live on my own in a one bedroom flat and it's a mess. I can't remember the last time I cleaned properly. It just overwhelms me. Even keeping on top of the laundry and washing up is tough enough! But I decided yesterday that enough is enough and it's time to declutter and clean. I started on my bedroom today. Rearranged some of the furniture and it looks better already. I've a bin bag of old shoes to take to recycle in the boot of the car. Others to either charity shop (likely) or try to sell. I've done my laundry for this week, put the last 2 weeks worth of laundry away and done all of the washing up. Next on the list is to clean the hall, hoover the lounge and bedroom and clean the kitchen and bathroom. Then to go through the rest of the bedroom getting rid of stuff that is sitting around gathering dust and making room stuff that I actually use. I can do this.

Wow, you've done such a lot already and should be really proud of yourself. Well done for that and for having worked out your next steps. You're right, you can do this.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 10/09/2024 01:01

Thank you @Homebird8 that's really nice of you to say so. I've posted this as a reminder for when I invariably lose motivation to keep me going!

I've been thinking about you. @NeverMindTheBackProblems. How's it going? Did you get your car boot emptied?

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 22/09/2024 23:40

Aww, thank you for thinking of me @Homebird8 😊
It's slow progress but I am still trying. I took the shoes to recycle this week so that's them out of the boot of the car. I've moved my towels and sheets into the box the shoes were in where I can reach them now, they were in the top of the wardrobe before so that's a lot more convenient. And got a shoe rack for the ones I have left. I've sent a big box of CDs, DVDs and books to Music Magpie - £30 woohoo! And bagged up what they wouldn't take to take to the charity shop at some point. I've ordered a box from Vintage Cash Cow and sorted out loads of stuff from when my parents died that were in my garage to send off to them. I'm still on top of the washing up. I haven't put away last weeks laundry because I was sorting out the CDs but I'll put that away when this week's load is dry which is in the machine to put on in the morning. I've emptied all the bins and put them out with the recycling. I'm really proud of myself!

Wow, I've run out of energy just reading that. I took it into my head to repaint my bedroom. The previous colour had been chosen to match some other items that I don't have anymore and it turns out that I hated it when they were gone. And the offending colour you ask? It's exactly the shade of pale yellow that the original post-its come in. I've gone for a pretty pale green instead but the room is in chaos and I can't get to my desk which is difficult as I work from home. I'll wish you luck in maintaining your efforts and I'll try not to think about what possessed me to start this job and continue with your role model to follow.

Oh I love green, it's such a soothing colour. My lounge is pale green too. How's the chaos going? Did you have to work today and did you find a path to your desk?
Monday evening is usually my chill evening. I wfh Mondays so just flop on the sofa after and veg. But not tonight! I went to the supermarket, £120 later eek as I don't go very often and the list was long. Put the wash on this morning and then hung it on airers in the hall with the doors closed and dehumidifier on. It was dry within 4 hours but I don't want to think what that cost. I usually have most of my clothes on airers and some on hangers in the doorway and I've been wondering what to do with the hanging clothes now the doors are closed and I've decided to buy a clothes rail to put in the hall with the clothes airers. I've found one on FB for £5 so that's good. Bin day tomorrow so they're out and washing up done. Even made myself a lovely stew for dinner with leftovers for the next couple of nights. I also topped up the soap dispenser in the bathroom and changed the toothbrush heads. Although the bathroom remains filthy!

Keep going! Using you as my inspiration...

I did manage to find a path to my desk but had to put off painting behind it and to one side of it until the weekend when I can dismantle the lot. I hate cables with a passion and there are so many of them. The old yellow look even worse next to the new green which I love. It changes colour dependent on where the sun is in the sky and whether the trees outside are moving.

Today's challenge is making something of my birthday. For complicated reasons it usually gets a bit forgotten so this year I have arranged to see a friend for lunch and a walk and given myself the gifts of a new book and a promise to myself to exercise a little bit each day. I have arranged sushi for dinner and DD has made a cake. I feel better for enthusing people to celebrate with me although I still believe it shouldn't be my job.

Your drying racks sound great. And a dehum is a great ways to get things dried fast and not put a load of unwanted moisture into your home where it can make things mouldy. It's the tiny things like the toothbrush heads and the soap that are the cherry on the top though because they are so difficult to remember to just do and make you feel so much better when they are done. Keep up the good work. You're helping me too.

Oh thank you @oldslippers2024 - please feel free to post how you are getting on.
@Homebird8 Is it your birthday? Happy birthday if so!
So I had started out at the corner of one room and intended to work my way around the walls if that makes sense. But farking hell, my bathroom was the last on the list and it was disgusting - so I decided to ditch the plan and go for the worst room instead and I cleaned it a couple of days ago. It didn't take too long actually and has really lifted my spirits. The one thing I did when I moved into my flat was to get a new bathroom and I love it and now it's all shiny and new again! Not quite on top of the washing up and putting the laundry away again so that's on the agenda for this weekend. It feels good to have a plan.

I had a lovely birthday thanks and am so far keeping up with the exercise. To be fair it's only 3 minutes a day for the moment but will build up. Turns out that painting is quite good for the arms too!

Tackling that bathroom sounds to have been a really good idea especially as you knew it was lovely under the chaos. Because you go into a bathroom every now and then through the day you get the nice surprise several times over of it being done. I keep getting that with my lovely painted walls when I wake in the morning and it's a fab way to start the day.

I'm just looking at the last of the awful yellow having painted green along the skirtings ready to roller the walls. In 15 minutes the post-it colour will be a thing of the past. A couple of coats later and some cutting in and all will be peace and tranquility (once I have reassembled my desk too). No idea why I lived with it for so long!

Good luck with your progress along the ways of the room you put aside for the great bathroom adventure.
