Bits in songs that make you cringe

Inspired by the thread the other day about "More Than Words" by Extreme. Like many posters, I hadn't heard the song in years, so went to listen to it. It was all going well until the bit when he sings "Hold me close don't EVAH LET ME GO" and I had to turn it off immediately.

What bits of songs do you find jarring and/or embarrassing? I have so many, but will try to choose a few. Lines where they've had to awkwardly shift the words around or use old-fashioned vocab/syntax to make them fit are definitely among the worst offenders.

In "Upside Down" by Diana Ross: "Respectfully I say to thee..." Whyyyy

In "A Spaceman Came Travelling" - the bit where he sings about a baby's cry and then the guitar imitates a newborn crying. This might be the worst one.

In "Come On Eileen" - "You in that dress, my thoughts, I confess, verge on dirty" Just no. The awkward old-fashioned phrasing, and the way his voice goes when he sings "dirty". Unbearable.

Echo and the Bunnymen

Spare us the cutter
Spare us the cutter
Couldn't cut the M-M-M-Mustard!

I don't know what this cutter is and McCulloch won't tell us, so I'm not sure if it's good or bad that he can't cut the mustard.

I read that the song was about his struggles with OCD.

backslashruby · 14/09/2024 17:45

Got to admire Alice Cooper's honesty though - We can't even think of a word that rhymes!

I know its been said before but Never Ever by the All Saints is the worst possible cringe.

It was also wrong that they picked Shaznay to say the line about the black hole.

I don't get your point about Shaznay and the 'take me out of this black hole' line?

Shaznay wrote the song - is she not allowed to sing any idioms/phrases including the word 'black', just because she happens to have black skin herself? Bizarre.

From 9 to 5 I have to spend my day at work,
My job is very boring I'm an office clerk! 🎶

Oh dear oh dear, Martha and the Muffins ...

But despite the horrible effort at rhyming assonance, not least the bizarre band name, I love the song regardless.

Ormally · 14/09/2024 22:13

@SerafinasGoose
There is a little-known song called 'Zip!' that was written by Rodgers and Hart. The premise is an interview with very clever strip artiste, Gypsy Rose Lee.
Between going 'Zip!', you get her inner thoughts, that range from Stravinsky to selected spiritual leaders, painters, playwrights and lingerie designers.
(This song is pretty sublime, is not a contender for the 'could try harder' bracket).

One couplet goes:
"English people don't say clerk, they say claaark.
(Zip!) Anybody who says claaark is a jaaark"

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 14/09/2024 23:54

I love the song, but the forced rhymes in Manic Monday are woeful.

Prince, as all the rest of us, knew full well that Monday and Sunday rhyme, but then, erm, that's about it.

'Fun day' - what on earth is that?! And as for 'my I-don't-have-to-run day' - horrific!

This made my day! Thank you 😂

Some others:
R Kelly "‘What’s going on inside my pants, I can’t explain"
We dont wanna know.

I have a particular hatred for Love, love me do, you know I love you, Ill always be true, so pleeeeeeease love me do.
And that is the whole effing song. That harmonica is so annoying.
You could tell The Beatles were doing quantity instead of quality so often.

Lots of rap lyrics are so dodgy, remember an interiew with Jay Z when se said something along the lines now he had a daughter he felt weird singing about bitches, realising soemone may be calling his own daughter that and he would not want that.

Katie Perry's I Kissed a Girl didnt really age that well in my opinion, just sounds so infantile.

Tell me you don't know much about the Beatles without telling me....

I thought I kissed a girl was infantile when it was first released. I was like "errr, who hasn't love?"

Every line of this awful song -

Today, I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today, I swear, I'm not doing anything, uh

[Verse 1]
I'm gonna kick my feet up, then stare at the fan
Turn the TV on, throw my hand in my pants
Nobody's gon' tell me I can't, nah
I'll be lounging on the couch, just chillin' in my Snuggie
Click to MTV, so they can teach me how to dougie
'Cause in my castle, I'm the freaking man

Oh-oh, yes, I said it (Ooh-ooh)
I said it, I said it, 'cause I can (Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

[Chorus]
Today, I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today, I swear, I'm not doing anything

[Post-Chorus]
Nothing at all
Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, ooh
Nothing at all
Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, ooh

[Verse 2]
Tomorrow, I'll wake up, do some P90X
Meet a really nice girl, have some really nice sex
And she's gonna scream out, "This is great!" (Oh my God, this is great)
Yeah, I might mess around and get my college degree
I bet my old man will be so proud of me
But sorry, pops, you'll just have to wait

[Pre-Chorus]
Oh-oh, yes I said it (Ooh-ooh)
I said it, I said it, 'cause I can (Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh)

Today, I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today, I swear, I'm not doing anything

[Bridge]
No, I ain't gonna comb my hair (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
'Cause I ain't going anywhere (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
I'll just strut in my birthday suit (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
And let everything hang loose (Ooh-ooh-ooh)
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

[Chorus]
Oh, today, I don't feel like doing anything
I just wanna lay in my bed
Don't feel like picking up my phone
So leave a message at the tone
'Cause today, I swear, I'm not doing anything

[Post-Chorus]
Nothing at all
Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, ooh
Nothing at all
Woo-hoo, woo-hoo, ooh
Nothing at all

And all of Taylor Swifts songs, obviously.

@HolidayAtNight your OP made me cry with laughter! I love Spaceman came travelling for its ridiculous overblown-ness, when Chris starts going nuts towards the end jabbering some bollocks about the whole wide world waiting to see etc. 80s/90s was go hard or go home with the cringe factor and you just need to give in and go with it!

One that I find extremely jarring is NIN Hurt, Trent Rezner wears his crown of ‘shit’ which just kinds of sounds like a 12yr old trying to sound tough. The Cash cover with ‘thorns’ is much classier. I’m sure Trent would sob himself to sleep if he heard my damning review haha!

Crown of thorns is SO much better. How would a crown of shit even stay on your head?

Ooh yeah All Saints Never Ever. ‘A few questions that ah need ta know’. Ignoring the horrible syntax for a second, the thudding estuary voice is the antidote to desire.

Isn't it Nicole Appleton sort of talking that bit, and she has an American accent?

The Umbrella-Ella-Ella" bit in the Rhianna song. I loathe it.

And the fact she says "amber-ella" the WHOLE time, I have to change station if its´s ever on the radio, yuk!

whynotwhatknot · 18/09/2024 19:33

The synth/keyboard solo bit in I Want To Break Free. I love Queen, but I bloody hate that song, and that bit in particular. Byooww byooww byooww byooww byooo-ooo-owwww.

the80sweregreat · 19/09/2024 12:29

I like the all saints song ' never ever ' and I just think she's singing about depression ( the 'black hole ' lyrics)

I can forgive ABC anything - even Martin's talky bit in Broken Arrow is fine with me

I’ve met him a few times and he’s lovely.

ImWearingPantaloons · 26/01/2025 19:02

I hate all 'talky bits' in songs.

Is it not the conditional tense?

If I lay here, would you lie with me?

Yup. Perfectly correct tense progression. Past tense in the 'if' clause, followed by a clause in the conditional. 'Lay' is the past tense of 'lie'.

ThewaytoAmarula · 26/01/2025 19:31

All of Miami by Will Smith

Ladies half-dressed, fully equipped
And they be screamin out, "Will we loved your last hit!"

Hohofortherobbers · 26/01/2025 19:46

'If he's xxl, then what the hell, every penny don't fit the slot'
