Hi all - would love to hear some thoughts from folks who live or have lived in north Dorset or thereabouts. I'm a single mum with a 4yo and looking to move that way to be closer to family. Ideal is a bit of rural life but with access to at least some facilities, but good primary school (ideally in walking distance), and decent prospects for secondary, are most important. Ideally a relatively small primary that is trauma informed / highly nurturing (I will be going to do some visits asap of course). And although it's down the line, so very hard to predict what would be right secondary wise, my gut tells me a giant 2,000 secondary wouldn't be best for her.
Looking at slightly larger spots (shaftesbury, sherborne, maybe dorchester, sturminster newton and stalbridge) and at villages with primary schools (tisbury, buckland newton, thornford, motcombe, bishop's caundle, durweston?) but I need to narrow the net, and quite fast!

Any experiences and opinions very welcome!

Hi! Did you ever get any further with this? I live in one of the villages you mentioned, happy to help if you still need any advice. The vast majority of the village primary schools are well regarded. As you said, you might just want to think about which secondary school catchment you move into. We were keen to stay in catchment for the Gryphon. Thomas Hardy's in Dorchester has a very good reputation but it is big. Sturminster Newton is a smaller secondary.
Hope that helps a little!

My mother used to live on Gold Hill in Shaftesbury. She loved it and the trek into the town centre kept her fit.
