What do you think happens after you die ?

I’m waiting on “you’ll be dead and that’s that“ 🤣
but genuinely curious as to what everyone else thinks happens , I know it’ll be like before you were born , you won’t know but what if after life/recantation is a thing ? I’ve come to terms with the fact tomorrow isn’t promised but what if there’s afterlife and we get born into a horrible abusive family ? In that case I think I’d rather just be nothing ? What you all think ? Love to read these threads thought I’d make one myself 😆

Absolutely nothing. It has always just seemed so obvious to me that people have invented nice afterlife stories so that they feel less scared of dying, and bad afterlife stories to control people and make them behave themselves!

Cynic17 · 08/09/2024 20:37

Nothing. Your physical remains get burnt or buried but you, as a person, completely cease to exist at the moment of death. Thank goodness.

FineSoFine · 08/09/2024 20:43

I think death will be like before being born.. nothing. I am not scared of it, it is going to happen.. If there is another life after, I would hope to come back as a bird.

myfitbitisfucked · 08/09/2024 20:46

I am not religious at all.
therefore I am not sure why I hope that at that split second I leave this mortal coil I will walk metaphorically into a room where it’s like a childhood Christmas with all my family plus my soul dog waiting. It is beyond me.
I am so so angry at my fear and need for something so ridiculous given the horror and fear I have experienced and survived in my life the last few years where death would pale in comparison.

For some reason this has made me cry. Not in a bad way at all. Perhaps it’s the fact I posted directly before I read this. I am often awake at the point they start singing and it brings me immense comfort, like a sign of life going on

StMarieforme · 08/09/2024 20:59

I believe the emotions of a person can carry on almost ethereally. I know I can feel my Dad when I need him. Their emotional energy, as it were.

I've just had a close bereavement and

StMarieforme · 08/09/2024 21:00

Sent too soon,

And have seen signs of their energy.

I’m one of the atheists who finds it very comforting to believe that nothing happens after you die and humans are no more significant in the grand scheme of things than a tree or a frog or a bacterium.

And if you believe in evolution (which is scientific fact) then we can't possibly be more significant than any other living thing on this planet, we've just got the most evolved brains.

Buggysleeper · 08/09/2024 21:21

So much more than we could ever imagine. Our pineal glands produce DMT to transport us to another dimension. I know I sound bananas, but look it up. People who have taken DMT report going to a place where they see the same incredible beings and entities.

I can’t remember ever being unhappy before I was born.
There have been times in my life when I’ve been unhappy.
I’ll settle for it being like before birth.

No pain, no fear, no depression or anxiety, no hunger or suffering. It'll do for me too!

The process of dying might be a frightening one but death is the easy bit, easier than life.

UtterlyOtterly · 08/09/2024 21:25

Highonthehillsisalonelygoatherd

I completely disagree with your stance, but thank you for your reply.

ItsTheTattiesMrsCulfeathers · 08/09/2024 21:28

I'm Christian so I believe we live on in heaven, however, part of me hopes it's like the TV show Ghosts - as long as I'm fully dressed!

I have had the privilege of nursing 2 of my grandparents at the end of their lives and was with each of them while they passed (peacefully, thankfully - after long illnesses).

I didn’t really put much focus into my beliefs before but I truly believe that with each of them I witnessed the moment that their soul/spirit left their bodies. It was not long before they took their final breaths. There was just a change that I can’t really describe - like their body was just empty - just a vessel.

I do believe that I’ll see them again one day - I have no idea where or when that will be. I just know that I’m comforted by that fact

I know exactly what you mean and witnessed that exact same moment. Something left the body, I literally saw it leave, they were no longer "them" and then they took their last breath. It was quite profound.

Then one by one that night, starting with the hall light outside the bedroom, all the lights in the house blew and the same thing (flickering/blown lights) regularly happens on the anniversary of their deaths.

It's also happened (lights flickering and going crazy) minutes before a phone call being received to notify us of a bereavement. Not always the same house either so not dodgy electrics. All very odd. I'd have been inclined to believe "nothing" before...now I'm not so sure.

That’s your choice.

And if nothing changes you will get what you have chosen 👉🏻 eternity without God.

No one is forced to be with Him.

I pray you will come to faith in Jesus in time 🙏🏻

It is indeed your choice, if you too believe in Jesus as your saviour, then you too will join other believers in Heaven, after Judgement.

Totallymessed · 08/09/2024 21:31

AgileGreenSeal · 08/09/2024 19:59

The offer of salvation is open to everyone, absolutely no one is excluded. And it doesn’t depend on any talent or good works -all it takes is the humility to put one’s faith in Jesus Christ as Saviour and Lord.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” John 3:16

Those who reject the offer won’t be forced to be with Him. They have chosen to reject Him, and their choice is respected, for eternity.

But surely, as God's creation, God would understand human fallibility and weaknesses? I was brought up as a Christian, and while I'm no longer a believer, my understanding of Christianity is of forgiveness and empathy. I don't recognise your version of Christianity, and, to be blunt, I don't like it. It seems unforgiving and harsh. Like I say, not very Christian. I don't think Jesus would be a fan.

XenoBitch · 08/09/2024 21:36

Nothing. It will be like before you were born. The human body is born to die, and makes us feel comfortable in those final moments with things like visioning, seeing the light etc.

I am atheist, but my DF professes to be "born again" Christian (he is not!), and keeps saying I should take the chance and believe so I can go to heaven.

Sorry, but an afterlife as me would be literal hell (I have several MH issues). Plus I can't force myself to believe in god and Jesus etc any more than I can force myself to believe in Elvis working in my local chippy.

Yes God understands human frailty all too well. However He is a God of justice and because of that he cannot allow sin to stand. Originally humans were given the Book of the Law via Moses, and told to keep to its laws and if they did, then God would bless them in all things. However over time they drifted and went after other gods, didn't keep the Law, and so God punished them. However He always made it clear that if they turned back in repentence, then He would forgive them, you can find instances of this throughout the Old Testament, and of course the punishment where they did not, and blessings where they did.

When Jesus was incarnate on the Earth, He became the final sacrifice for all our sins, because he was perfect and without sin. He took all of God's anger for our sins so that we might have eternal life. Without that sacrifice we would all be doomed to destruction. This is the most incredible gift. We don't deserve it and yet God loves us so much that He gave us his Son.

ShiftySquirrel · 08/09/2024 21:59

I come from a big catholic family and went to a catholic school. When asked what happens after you die the nun teaching us, aged about 6, said that Jesus will give you a big hug. I remember wondering how she knew! It's a lovely idea though.

When I die I hope to see all my gone-before-me loved ones. If that includes getting a hug from Jesus too, then all credit to Sister Francis!

It could be that the perception of seeing loved ones or a feeling at absolute peace will be triggered by the last electrical activity in my brain- I'd settle for that.

But the fleshy parts, cremated or otherwise will be recycled by nature and live on in other ways.

The mental gymnastics that apologetics involve never cease to amuse me.

When I was put under general anaesthetic I went from chatting away to the anaesthetist one minute and then woke up in the recovery suite. In between that was complete nothingness. No dreaming, no awareness of time passing, not even any darkness. Just... nothing. I think death is like that on a permanent basis and I will have no awareness at all, which I don't find scary. I'll be glad of a rest!

I do think our energy if you like goes elsewhere in the universe and is transferred somewhere but with no consciousness attached to it. I tell my children that when people die they become stars....my energy may well go into a dock leaf or a dung beetle or something but I imagine some of it will inevitably end up out in the cosmos so I don't feel like I'm making anything up when I tell DDs that.

That’s a nice idea.

I’d be wondering how energy gets to those places if you die inside a house or hospital. I know sometimes they open a window in a hospital (maybe for that reason) but my mum died at home and the windows weren’t open. Is her spirit bouncing around the walls or travelling through walls? The trouble with me is I can’t believe in any of it because none of it makes logical or logistical sense to me.

I think if God was any kind of decent God he’d sort the really shitty people out now instead of waiting for them to die then pass judgement etc. He could vanquish all sorts of nasty stuff with a click of his magic fingers, like any decent person would if they had the power.

itsjustbiology · 08/09/2024 22:09

I don;t understand life let alone death. I am not being flippant I genuinely do not understand. why are we here? Why are we all who we are? What purpose do we serve or what purpose are we meant to serve? Why do we make the choices we do or why do some people suffer ? I don't get any of it. We learn all this stuff, experience all we do then what do we do with what we learn? Its mindboggling to me.
