What do you think happens after you die ?

I’m waiting on “you’ll be dead and that’s that“ 🤣
but genuinely curious as to what everyone else thinks happens , I know it’ll be like before you were born , you won’t know but what if after life/recantation is a thing ? I’ve come to terms with the fact tomorrow isn’t promised but what if there’s afterlife and we get born into a horrible abusive family ? In that case I think I’d rather just be nothing ? What you all think ? Love to read these threads thought I’d make one myself 😆

Well if I get my wish I’ll be strung as a skeleton
and taken out on the town by medical students!

So everyone who has different religions and all the lovely kind people who dont believe in Jesus are in hell? That’s so sad. 😞

Edited

Yes it is sad, but their choice. We all have a choice. You don't get into Heaven via good works, but by faith in Jesus and repentance from sin.

No of course they are not in hell and can go to heaven.

What if, for example, they were innocent native people in a far away place, living their lives separate from our civilisation but happened to not know about Jesus?

To say they would go to hell would really be to miss the point of Jesus imo.

Yes if someone has never heard the gospel message I believe they will hear it after they die. I don't think God wants anyone to miss out totally. But I'm not a theologian and I may be wrong about that.

The writings of my superb countryman CS Lewis, wonderful as they are, aren’t Holy Scripture.

I’ve never suggested otherwise..? I admit to not having read all his non-fiction, but anyone who banishes Susan from the Pearly Gates because she likes boys and parties clearly had issues.

This is absolutely bizarre to me. And so cruel.

Newsenmum · 10/09/2024 22:44

Maybe there’s an atheist heaven where all the good people who spend their lives trying their best to be good, kind people for the pureness of it and not because they’re trying to get anywhere.

Like coach class and CrunchyCarrot is in first class heaven? Hmm.

ncforcatquestion · 10/09/2024 22:48

I've thought quite a lot about this. Maybe it's like you go to the bardo worlds described in buddhism, where it's like a dream and you're disorientated and forget your past life and move on. But if you believe in Jesus you would continue on to that heaven and stop being reborn and retain this consciousness. Because I couldn't understand a god that worked otherwise, and was so cruel

I wouldn’t take too much theology from fiction, myself.
by the way, have you read the Screwtape Letters?
Very ingenious 😊

I know. It’s like you can be a good person,
or you can believe in me. 👀 if you believe in me and worship me then you can come to my party.

What if you come back as an intensly farmed animal or a child in war zone? I find the concept of reincarnation terrifying

Yes this is what scares me, I want to believe there is something more.. but what if it’s worse than now

No, I am definitely not in first class! I am barely in the door. I have spent many years of my life away from my faith and doing what I wanted to do. It didn't go very well, and I wish I hadn't. I have repented of that and although I can't make up for the lost years, God is able to use my (often bad) experiences to help others.

I do find it strange when people quite categorically say there is nothing.
Given the miracle of existence - that we are here, living our lives- it seems entirely logical to me that there can just as readily be an afterlife as the lives we are currently living.
It's all mind blowing.

I agree.

Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked.”

I’d want to be there.

The idea of being in a heaven filled with born again Christians and Southern Baptist types sounds like a horror show.

I’m a good person but I am far from perfect. I’ve never killed anyone or caused people trauma but I don’t think I’d pass God’s tests. I don’t want to worship God, I think he’s an a*sehole actually (well if he existed). I certainly don’t want to spend eternity with him but a place with Christopher Hitchens in it would be very enjoyable. I’d listen to his sermons lol.

I'm not a good person, neither are you, nor is any human being. I am a saved person, saved by the grace of God by the death of Jesus Christ. This gift is available to everyone, so that all may have eternal life.

Eternal life to do or be what?

You didn’t answer my previous question regarding god allowing bad things to happen to children but giving the abuser the opportunity to repent. I’m interested in your views on that.

MsJinks · 11/09/2024 10:24

The ‘gift’ isn’t available to everyone though and neither you nor God can pretend it is. There are people who live their whole lives never hearing about Jesus. There are people who have exceptionally short lives. There are people born into slavery and penury with no access to hear of Jesus before their lives are gone too early. There are many many people born into other religions and cultures who are only taught from a young age about their own faith and ways and for some no other way is even possible. There are many people who lived and died prior to Jesus.
To think it’s fine that billions of people are binned off for very unreasonable reasons and unrealistic expectations is quite awful. I feel it’s like folk who would grab the titanic lifeboats and watch others drown.
I don’t really have a faith though would be perhaps culturally Christian. I strongly believe in respecting others’ beliefs, and am ok with very probably not a thing but a very faint maybe a Brucie bonus for some - but if this is true Christianity I’m going with definitely not a maybe tbh. I don’t think all practicing Christians have this view though.
This imo is the trouble with ‘man made’ religion.

Eternal life to live as we were meant to live - free of sin, illness and death. I presume we will work, rest, fellowship, worship, live in a community, enjoy the beauty of the new Earth.

Sorry I may have missed your question, I'm not on this thread all the time, I do have other things to do!

It's a very difficult question, because who wants to see terrible things happen to innocent children. Doesn't matter whether you have faith or not, it's upsetting. I can't answer why God allows the level of suffering that happens in this world to continue. He allows us to have free will, but so many abuse that, so why wouldn't he stop it. God has not remained distant from this human suffering though, as he died on the Cross himself, why did he do that? So that He has become part of human suffering. He was resurrected, He will bring judgement on those who have caused suffering, a harsh judgement. Yes an abuser has the opportunity to repent as do all of us. However if that person does not, then he is condemned in God's eyes, rightly so.

There isn't a nicely packaged answer to give you. This is a great video by an Oxford professor of Maths, who is also a Christian, named John Lennox. He talks about suffering, atheism, Richard Dawkins, judgement amongst other things.
