How to politely tell friend to shut up?

I have a friend who has been talking about the same thing for at least 4 weeks. Doesn't matter what we're talking about, he'll find a way to shoehorn the subject into conversation. I don't want to be rude but I'm getting fed up!

Just tell him you're not interested, that you've heard about it for the last month! That's not rude it's factual. If they are a friend you should be able to say that.
Or yawn every time they mention it!

He's got his first car. I understand the excitement but I can't tolerate every single conversation being dominated by him talking about the car, where he's travelled to etc!! I know I sound horrible but it's draining me

I will absolutely make that suggestion, hopefully he'll get the message. Even when I've been sat in his car, he won't stop talking about it

I might shoot myself in the foot with that one, as he'll take that as the go ahead to start yapping 😂

Or like with small children "that's the best car story I've heard today" I do this with friends children's "artwork" 🤣

When I was at uni, one of our friends got a car, bit of a novelty as we were all 19/20 and he was the only one. It was all he talked about.
We called him 'car keys' as a nickname as at any random point he would say 'oh where are my car keys' 'have you seen my car keys?'. Then started calling the bus the 'pleb wagon' etc.
It bugged the hell out of me. I find cars boring anyway, but to be talked about non stop. Urgh.
One day he started up and i just exclaimed 'urgh Taylor we all know you have a car stop!'

I like the pp suggestion of 'I'm going to stop you there'...

SisterAgatha · 07/09/2024 14:19

With my friends I might say “you still on about that car then?”

Just be straight and honest

That sounds unbearable. My mate will message me about anything to do with him and his car totally unprompted e.g "I got petrol today" "I went to the garage today" "I went from A to B with out a satnav today". He's in his 30's so I find it quite unusual

OP posts:
SisterAgatha · 07/09/2024 14:25

“I got petrol today”
Great, pick me up a crunchie
”i drove without a satnav today”
Wicked, bring me a maccas on the way back

he’ll soon drop off talking about it 🤣

I've started doing this as trying to change the subject to something completely unrelated doesn't work 😂
