Mattresses - my head is exploding

My current mattress (Eve) is destroying my back, it's time for a new one. I also have general aches and pains and bursitis in my shoulder.

I wanted to buy a Warren Evans mattress but I'm concerned about the wool content as I have carpet moths. I can't eradicate them completely unfortunately as they're in the communal areas of my block of flats. I've read that encasing the mattress in a zipped cover can stop them, but it will obviously need washing occasionally and as I live alone I'm anticipating this would be very difficult for me to manage single-handedly. Does anyone have experience of moths and mattresses? I do have a wool duvet cover which they don't seem interested in.

Alternatives are places like Dreams, Furniture Village etc but I wouldn't know where to start. I know I could go and lie on some but it's impossible to know how you'll get on with it until you've slept on the mattress for a few weeks. They offer 60 day trials but they come with lots of terms and conditions and I'm worried I'll get stung. Warren Evans' trials are no quibble.

I looked at IKEA but the reviews of their mattresses are dire, I don't want to risk it.

Can anyone offer any recommendations? Or reassurance on moths and wool mattresses?

Edit: recommendations for pocket sprung mattresses. I'd never touch a memory foam mattress again!

My back was destroyed by an Emma mattress and I replaced it with this Silentnight one. Most comfortable mattress I’ve ever slept on. www.silentnight.co.uk/silentnight-miracoil-geltex-mattress.html

I have one of the John Lewis ultimate natural collection mattresses, it was wildly expensive but I’m a terrible sleeper and I figured for something I’d spend so much time in for years it was worth the investment and it really is, I love my bed. Go to JL though and try a few out and see what’s comfortable for you.

No idea re the moth situation though.

@user028793 sometimes when you buy a new mattress it comes encased in a large plastic bag. Could you then ask that it remains in the bag and put a deep mattress topper on and see how you get on like that?

@PhillyJoe I like the look of that one although a bit scared about the gel aspect after my memory foam experience. Also, it looks very deep. I don't know if I'd manage to rotate it on my own.

@ANiceCuppaTeaandBiscuit I had a posh JL mattress years ago but ended up sending it back as it was so hard and so heavy. I'd tested it out in the shop but it wasn't until I'd slept on it for a couple of weeks I realised it wasn't for me.

@IsometimeswonderwhoIam I don't know that I could bear the rustling or get a good feel for it if the plastic was still on.

The other issue is that, again, living alone and with a dodgy shoulder, I'd need the delivery people to actually put the mattress on the bed for me, not sure if they do that? It's all such a pain in the arse but at the moment I dread going to bed knowing how much pain I'll wake up in.

Switched last year to a Hypnos mattress, spent a lot of time choosing, a lot of time lying on beds in John Lewis. Really wanted sprung rather than foam like you do but it might be hard to get a good quality pocket sprung without wool.

pintofsnakebite · 06/09/2024 21:40

We've just bought a new mattress from Benson's for Beds. Dreams was on the same retail park and had a similar selection.

Both had a test machine thing where you lie on it and it measures pressure and what type would be best.

I suspect this is really just down to how much you weigh.

They then picked out a number of options to test.

It arrives next week.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 06/09/2024 21:42

I know you say no memory foam but would you consider hybrid? My old Otty mattress was the best one I ever had. We have a dreams now and thats good too but I did prefer the Otty.

PepperSauce · 06/09/2024 21:44

We went to Dreams 2 weeks ago snd lay on the test machine thing. We ordered a Trmpura memory foam mattress which arrived today. Really hope we like it as I hated our last mattress which was a pocket spring John Lewis mattress filled with wool (the Wensleydale). Really good I love the new one but am a bit concerned about the memory foam 🤞🤞🤞

No, I'd never touch memory foam or any mattress in a box again. The Eve was so, so comfortable to sleep on...at first. Two years in it started to lose all support but by then the company had gone bust so I couldn't raise a dispute with them. I tried dealing with it via my credit card company but they were no help.

We have a fairly traditional wool type one from Bensons - it's done a good few years now and still comfortable. I really think being an to try a mattress in store is important

PhillyJoe · 06/09/2024 21:58

@user028793 I was also worried about memory foam again as like you I found it fine at first but it got less supportive as time went on and really hurt my back. This is totally different. It just gives the nice soft feeling but with the firmness underneath. I really love it. I’ve had it a year and both my back and hips have been much better. I am able to rotate it myself but it is very heavy. My delivery men put it on the bed for me and room off the plastic.

We've just bought a new Premier Inn mattress. We stay in Premier inns and always have a good night's sleep so decided to buy one of theirs which they sell new on their website.

It's great and we're getting a good night's sleep. It comes with a thick mattress topper section too.

Their delivery men bought it up stairs and set it up for us.

TortillasAndSalsa · 06/09/2024 22:02

We recently had to bin our Simba mattress after just over 2yrs. Worst mattress ever and will never have another one. It was so uncomfortable. We now have a pocket spring mattress bought from our local bedroom center and I'm over the moon with it. I've slept like a baby the last 3wks

Doggymummar · 06/09/2024 22:04

We got a winter summer reversible from Sussex Beds it's so comfy

TheCultureHusks · 06/09/2024 22:04

Honestly the best I’ve had is IKEA. Plus point, not expensive anyway if you hate it!

Hohofortherobbers · 06/09/2024 22:06

Watching with interest. I need a new mattress, I want pocket sprung . Went to IKEA and spent ages lying on their beds, ended up thinking they just weren't supportive enough. Dh and I were sure we'd roll together

scarfaced · 06/09/2024 22:18

The mattresses from Naturalmat are amazing but pricey

MsJacksonIfYoureNasty · 06/09/2024 22:28

PS - they also put your mattress on your bed and take the packaging away. Can’t recommend them enough. My mattresses are all a few years old and still so comfortable.

So we are thinking of getting a premier inn mattress as have good sleeps on them when stayed at a premier inn. Would you say it's a firm mattress?

WomensRightsRenegade · 08/09/2024 00:05

It’s so individual. I had to return our Tempura as it made my back 10x worse. Ordered a Simba and my back has been completely sorted. Am anxious the support won’t last more than a couple of years though!

Keroppi · 08/09/2024 00:06

I'm team Sealy forever

RE carpet moths, would sprinkling diatomaceous earth powder on carpets help? I used it for fleas years ago and it worked a treat. Safe for humans and pets. Sprinkle. Leave for a day. Then hoover. It kills eggs and larvae by shredding them or something

I'd say it's more towards medium than firm.

I can throughly recommend Dunlopillo Royal Sovereign. Can’t go wrong with latex and it’s so so comfy.
