HP vs Asus

Need a new family laptop. My old HP has just given up after 10+ years. Used for basic Web browsing, the odd word and excel documents and some basic homework.

Not a massive budget and found these two brands within my price range.

I know there is also Lenovo but I had one as an old work laptop and it did nothing but crash, so has completely put me off.

Any advice?

My Asus was a bit of a lemon - the mouse pad stopped working pretty quickly (after the warranty, of course), and the hinge is not sticky enough. It was also loaded up with a bunch of junk software. My partner's HP is much better. I think I will get an HP next.
