Broken little toe - any point in calling 111

Hello,

I kicked my bed post with my little toe yesterday, thought I had just stubbed it but today it's really hurting and painful to walk on so I'm limbing. It's bruised underneath so pretty sure I've broken it.

I'm assuming there's nothing I can do with it, just wait until it sorts itself out or would it be worth a call to 111 and see what they say?

Thank you

No point

No point elevate it as much as possible stick some ice / frozen peas on and take painkillers.
And a mild sweary word or 2 is completely acceptable at the time.

Tape it to your next toe to splint it

I'm not sure they'd help with a broken toe!

I broke my big toe. Don't do anything about it for 6 weeks. Got told off by the Dr who said I should have had it looked at when it happened and I would have been in a boot.

Big toes - need treatment
Other toes - don't need treatment

Buddy tape it to the toe next to it to stabilise.

This.

Sympathies, OP! I broke a next to little toe, went to A&E, they X rayed to make sure it really was broken, I was just told to tape it to the next. Was shortly going on holiday! But thank goodness was still able to swim in the sea - hobbling around everywhere else, of course.

When my daughter broke a toe I was told unless she'd lost feeling, or it was sticking out an odd angle, just to tape it to the one next to it.

Jifmicroliquid · 06/09/2024 09:37

No, they can’t do anything. Tape it to the next toe and take some painkillers. Job done.

Make sure you put a small piece of wadding between the 2 toes before taping them together though !

I broke my little toe. DH googled and insisted I went to a&e. Waited 3 hours (was a few years ago), X-ray confirmed it was broken and all the staff complimented me on the pretty spectacular bruising. Other than that they did nothing. I was offered an appointment at fracture clinic but I declined as the nurse said he wouldn't bother if it were him. It healed fine.

Nothing they can do. Unless it’s pointing in the wrong direction or bone has come through the skin. If it’s just swollen and very sore then strap it to the next toe, ice, elevate, try to stay off it. If you need to wear shoes don’t wear tight ones or heels.

Knotaknitter · 06/09/2024 11:03

Taping it to the next toe really does reduce the pain, my son recently broke his toe and he said it went from painful to manageable once it was taped.

Rory17384949 · 06/09/2024 11:56

If it's just a broken toe they won't do anything. But my mum "broke her toe" a couple of years ago and when it was still painful weeks later she was x-rayed and it turned out she had actually broken a bone in her foot and if she'd been seen at the time she would have been in a boot and it would have healed much better. She ended up in physio for months with it.
So basically if it's very bruised and painful it is worthwhile getting it seen just in case

The big toes matter as they are involved with balance. The others they just tape. Tape it yourself

This. And also tape it above and/or below the knuckles/joints (wait..are they called knuckles on toes?...). DS broke a toe recently and that's what we were told.

BobbyBiscuits · 06/09/2024 13:04

The baby toe they can't do anything. They rarely do anything even for big toe.
Elevate it and try not to have to wear a shoe. Mine was purple for months but the pain stopped after a week.
