I’m 47, have a mirena coil, rarely have sex…. Could I be five months pregnant?

Please talk me down. Nausea for the last few days. Something going on in my stomach (assumed IBS). Hungry, tired. Can’t get to the shops til tonight to get a test.

I have a mirena coil and haven’t had sex since April. The chances of me being pregnant must be so infinitesimally tiny, right?

Any other symptoms OP? Any sign of bump? Tbh the chance is very small, but obviously a test wouldn't go amiss.

heldinadream · 05/09/2024 10:29

Highly unlikely that you are pregnant. All symptoms with many other likely causes including just the day to day variation of bodies. So easy to panic; as women we are conditioned to panic and imagine pregnancy because the implications for our lives are so huge.
I had the same kinds of panics a few times in my life. Was never right. The two times I was pregnant involved no panics whatsoever.

I'm pretty sure it'll be something else @ImpossiblePossible

She said April.

It's very unlikely, but stranger things have happened. You can quickly and easily rule it out with a test, so do.

Stand tall. Lean backwards.. If your uterus was out of your pelvis you would feel it on this position if you were 3 months plus... At 5 months it would be very obvious..

ImpossiblePossible · 05/09/2024 10:37

No signs of a bump. Bit swollen.

OK. You have all made me feel much better, thank you. Was dreading the conversation with my teenagers 😁

Not all pregnancies are obvious stomach wise it would depend on a lot of things. But tests are £1.50 in Asda for 3 strips so hardly breaking the bank.

We had a friend who admittedly was younger, on the pill and discovered she was 7 months pregnant. She thought her little tummy was Christmas weight. I was 5 months pregnant and looked it, she most definitely did not look even early pregnant.

If you are having sex, any sex then pregnancy can occur. Just take a test, it doesn't have to be an expensive Clearblue digital.

Good tip about Asda, thanks. Ok, that is what I will do.

I’ll update later but I think we all know where this is going. 😊

Take a cheap test just to park it mentally, but it's far more likely to be perimenopause stuff

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 05/09/2024 11:16

I managed to get DP pregnant despite both a mirena and condoms.

We also didn't find out she was pregnant until very very late.

So yes, it's unlikely OP, but it is still possible. No harm (aside from a few quid) to get a test just to make sure.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 05/09/2024 11:22

Haha, fair point, it was a joint effort!

Edit: Although the condom broke, and I was the one who put it on, so you could make a case that it was all my fault.

Just coming in to add that I had a Mirena coil fitted and when I started to slide into menopause I had 'pregnancy-type' feelings. I felt sick and queasy and tired, but because the coil smoothed out the worst of the symptoms (I didn't have periods for example, so nothing to stop), I didn't know what was happening. I also thought I might be pregnant, but no, it was just menopause symptoms. They vanished altogether after about a year.

With a coil fitted, infrequent sex and none since April, I think pregnancy (especially if you already have children) would be showing and far more symptomatic by now!

heldinadream · 06/09/2024 13:01

Did you do a test @ImpossiblePossible ?

ImpossiblePossible · 06/09/2024 17:05

um no I didn’t do a test but I think I don’t need to take one on account of having had quite an upset stomach … and now feeling better 😊

Thanks MN. You were here for me when I needed good sense. 😁
