Who would the UK's Volodymyr Zelenskyy be? (lighthearted)

I've just caught part of the documentary on BBC2 and it got me wondering - who would be the UK's equivalent of him? An actor, comedian, winner of the Ukrainian version of Dancing with the Stars. But also - someone with enough gravitas and courage to lead the country in war as the underdog against one of the world's most dangerous men.

Steven Graham ( Combo from this is England )

Meditationgame · 05/09/2024 17:27

JK Rowling or Martin Lewis. Both should at least be in the cabinet!

If Sean Bean then [spoilers] would he and the whole of the UK have to be killed before the end?

England would suddenly become the Republic of Sheffield and we'd all have to talk with a broad Yorkshire accent or be banished.

I'm not sure we have anyone who has played the piano with their penis on tv....

We do actually (Jordan Grey), but I wouldn’t vote for them.

Vote for Danny Dyer here. He'd take no shit from Putin .

I'd love to see him having a convo with or about Putin.

I'm not particularly a DD fan but at times his straight talking is hilariously spot on!

Sean Bean

Nah, he’d only defend Yorkshire 😁

He'd be dead in the first ten minutes, as per.

This is a good point

Another vote for hugh grant. He's quite political nowadays and he has the Love Actually role to draw on.

You say that like it’s a bad thing

Ben Elton always likes a little bit of politics....

What do you think should be used instead of 'war'?

Why do you call it a 'war' with added punctuation, please?

I think (I wasn't the poster) that the clue was in the preceding words, about following instructions. So the 'war' many people have been led to believe is happening is different from the war which is actually happening.

daisychain01 · 06/09/2024 17:09

I'd vote for Feargal Sharkey, he is the epitome of social conscience, wisdom and straight talking. His running mate would be Brian May.

Some great suggestions. May I put forward a Dame Judy Dench and Mary Berry coalition? Imelda Staunton bringing up the rear.

Might need Dame Maggie Smith in there too.

Though all he actually did as PM in LA was have a weirdly objectifying conversation with one of his staff about the body of another one of his staff, do an embarrassing dance, and be rude to Billy Bob Thornton...

Putmeinsummer · 06/09/2024 17:48

Jamie theakstone. He manages the odd people on Heart phone ins very well, is tall and commanding but has also experience in riding out sexual scandal which is probably very relevant for most world politicians.

piscofrisco · 06/09/2024 17:50

@MidYearDiary so a sort of Boris Johnson lite then....

BreadInCaptivity · 06/09/2024 17:56

Please can Simon Marks be the political commentator? I love his voice and his encyclopaedic knowledge of world politics.

he holds no prisoners - he tears Trump to shreds on a regular basis with his pithy critique.

Giles Brandreth.

I actually just googled him because I was sure he'd been on strictly (he hadn't) but he became an MP for a time after his initial period of having a TV career.

Inextremis · 01/03/2025 20:57

David Mitchell. I would be amused.

Having just seen him in A Thousand Blows, I see what you mean!

Blimey, who knew? Can’t see Trump dissing him!
