For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

I thought egg white had no nutritional value.

There was a previous thread on this and someone said they thought the channel tunnel would run along the sea floor and you’d be able to see the fish. Still makes me laugh - sorry if you’re reading this!

Best part of taking school trips to,France, telling the kids to look out for the fish 😂

Cattery · 04/09/2024 22:04

@AppropriateAdult yes! I’d no idea it was the time! I thought it was because of the sun! Ha ha ha

I thought Freddie Flintoff and Andrew Flintoff were brothers, told my OH how proud their parents must be, to have them both play cricket for England. He has never let me forget it.

IgoogledYOLO · 04/09/2024 22:05

Oh and when I was a child I thought pipe cleaners were named for cleaning drainage pipes, not smoking pipes

I thought the Falkland Islands were just off the coast of Scotland.

How did you make sense of the war with Argentina?

Fizbosshoes · 04/09/2024 22:05

I'm embarrassed that for years I thought silicon valley was named that because of the amount of cosmetic surgery! Blush

I always thought narwhals were mythical creatures from stories. Only recently learned they actually exist!

Glad that’s not just me then!

I assumed Tracy chapman was a man. Even though the clue is in her name Blush

Tracy is a male name like Hilary

ifIwerenotanandroid · 04/09/2024 22:06

That a horse called Bar ran in an awful lot of races.

worrisomeasset · 04/09/2024 22:06

Back in the 70s, when I read in the NME that Stevie Nicks was in a relationship with Lindsey Buckingham, I assumed that this was a lesbian relationship as Lindsey is a girls’ name. I mean, all the Lindseys I’d ever met were girls (despite her masculine-sounding name, I knew that Stevie Nicks was a woman as it was usually a photo of her that accompanied articles about the band).

I thought heart failure was just that - heart failed and you died. No, it is cardio insufficiency in normal speak.

And they sound very like the Faroe's which are off the coast of Scotland to be fair.

That’s it. Faroe + Falkirk = Falkland Islands are in Scotland. I’m far too young to know about the war and didn’t learn about it in school so 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wondered for years why Trotsky was killed with an ice pick in Mexico - why would the have ice picks, for mountain climbing in Mexico where it's hot, and figured a Russian assassin had brought it over from Russia.

Discovered a few years ago that it was a small icepick used to break up ice in a bar.

Omg!!! THIS is now my answer as well, as before reading this comment I'd thought the same thing (and been confused as well).

I was an adult before I discovered that rabbits and hares are different animals. I thought hares were make rabbits.

duckydoo234 · 04/09/2024 22:07

That "a face on a lover with a foreigner's heart" is actually "a face on a lover with a fire in his heart". I learned that last Christmas. Really.

Craftycorvid · 04/09/2024 22:07

Wigan Pier - never occurred to me that Wigan is inland!

Tracy is a unisex name though.

I know a couple of blokes called Tracy.

The females (that I know) spell it Tracey.

I thought the Falkland Islands were just off the coast of Scotland.

I think you might have had the same teacher as me! Or are her!

I thought this for a very long time after her misinformation

Aaron95 · 04/09/2024 22:08

That pineapples grew on trees. I was gobsmacked to find out they grow on a tiny plant not much more than knee high.

......well close the schools and send the kids to MN, because here's another thing I've just learned this very second.
