For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

That Joseph had the techni coloured dreamcoat, not Jesus 🫣.

And, it's 'finicky' not 'finickitty' and definitely not 'pinikitty'....

Oh no pernickety is definitely a word!

In fairness though, using that logic you could say that you'd wonder what the UK thought it was doing trying to claim them seeing as how they are just off the coastline of Argentina....

Logic...always gets in the way there.

Not that close. 300 miles from the Patagonian coast, and they were uninhabited before the British established their colony there. What amazes me about assuming the Falkland Islands were in Scotland is not just that they aren't, but also Argentina is a long, long way from the UK and doesn't have a huge navy. How could they have sent that navy all the way to Western Europe without the rest of the world getting involved in some way?

@godmum56 the poster was American so I'm assuming they've never had the delight of faggots, chips and peas. My mum emailed my dad at work and mentioned that was their dinner and her email was blocked for profanity 🤣.
Americans are often surprised we call cigarettes fags too.

@Andoutcomethewolves the full Monty is set in Sheffield?

Similarly, County Durham is not in Ireland.

That made me laugh. I definitely don’t live in Ireland.

It still feels wrong that my instep is actually on the top of my foot.

No way!

@loropianalover so did I!

I saw Roy wearing sunglasses on Top of the Pops. I had never seen people wear sunglasses indoors apart from blind people.
It was probably in the 1970s.

Roy Orbison's dark glasses were his trademark and while he wasn’t blind, he did have poor sight and quite a pronounced squint. He started wearing them because he left his normal glasses on a plane early on in his career and only had his (prescription) sunglasses to hand for a gig and couldn’t see a thing otherwise - the look caught on and became his image.

On the topic of service stations, I thought Watford Gap was just outside London (i.e. in Watford). It’s in Northamptonshire and 75 miles from London.

Oh dear god….. I thought it was a gap in a line of hills somewhere to the north of the M4 around Reading 🫣🫣

FatOaf · 05/09/2024 09:09

I will never be able to accept that Jason Statham is an actor, not a character in a film series. That's exactly the kind of name a screen-writer would give to an "action movie" character who keeps getting blown up and flying into piles of cardboard boxes/oil drums/crates.

There was a previous thread on this and someone said they thought the channel tunnel would run along the sea floor and you’d be able to see the fish. Still makes me laugh - sorry if you’re reading this!

I used to think this too when I was wee. Thought it would be like an aquarium 😂

I thought the Falkland Islands were just off the coast of Scotland.

Not just you! When news of the Falklands war broke in 1982,I was at college. A girl in my class said 'Where are the Falkland Islands?' Another girl replied 'Off the coast of Scotland'. Although I have to admit,I didn't honestly know either!

The UK is not as "upright" in respect to north-south meridians as it looks on the back cover of the road atlas, to help it to fit in the rectangular page. Bristol is also further east than you think it is, being further east than Cardiff.

What!!?

I was 20 when the Falklands War broke out. There were many of us who couldn't understand why Argentina had invaded a Scottish archipelago.

I'm obviously older now, better travelled and better educated and TBF I still don't understand why these extremely remote South Atlantic islands have anything to do with Great Britain. It makes much more sense that they'd either be independent or be governed by Argentina.

Most conquered territories have become independent and are recognised as sovereign nations by the United Nations, but a few places (very small or very poor or both) are still colonies of rich nations - for example, American Samoa and the US Virgin Islands, French overseas territories like Guadeloupe and French Guiana, Tokelau in the Pacific (New Zealand), several Caribbean islands (Netherlands). The UK has lots because of our imperial past. If these places wanted independence they could probably have had it by now, but by remaining as British Overseas Territories they get many benefits they couldn't afford by themselves, as the Falkland Islands have demonstrated. The people who live there aren't Spanish-speaking and trace their origins to the UK. Virtually all of them want to remain British. They have no ties to Argentina at all.

I thought The Ashes were in a regular-sized trophy cup, was shocked when I saw a pic: it's the size of an eggcup!

I never knew that!

Falkland is in Scotland. Lord Falkland was, IIRC, some member of the government and explorers named the islands after him.

There are places all over the world named after the places explorers and colonists cane from, or had an affinity with. Prince of Wales Island is in Alaska. Perth is in Australia. London is in Canada. Wellington is in New Zealand.

However Moscow is in Scotland.

New Zealand is in Wiltshire

One of name change for this as verrrrty outing

thought newish friends ex wife was called Himla (that’s what he called her).

she turned up to collect her her son and I answered the door and shouted Himla’s here! (Not sure that’s the correct spelling of Hitla’s mate).

Had a similar experience! Thought a school mum was called Miley (like Miley Cyrus). Turned out she had a husband called Lee who she droned on and on about ("well my Lee says..") so the other mums referred to her as MyLee. Fortunately never spoke to her so didn't call her that to her face!

When I was a kid I always thought on film credits “In order of appearance meant all the best looking actors were listed first

Love this one!

I always assumed Edinburgh was in the east of the U.K. as a whole - it’s actually further west than Bristol.

It is on the east coast of Scotland though

Not sure if this counts but was talking with my sister recently and was laughing about how long it took me to realise that the piggy going to market in the "this little piggy" rhyme was not actually off to do his shopping.... She looked utterly shocked. We're both in our 40s. I didn't twig until I was in my 30s!!! 🙈

What??? I had never considered that either. I'm 56!!!

What a shitty song to sing to little children :(

So many things.

There was never a police nessy in the Family Ness named Elliot Ness.

Jessica Fletcher and Sarah Jessica Parker are two separate people. There is no Sarah Jessica Parker

See also Culluden and Fluddon. There is no Fulluden.

The Lockerbie bomber was a Libyan guy named Al-Megrahi. Not, as thought, an Irish republican named Al McGarry.

Ru Paul's Drag Race is a competition for drag queens. Not, (as I thought after somehow conflating it with Priscilla Queen of the Desert) a long distance overland car race in which everyone must wear drag.

Jessica fletcher is a character in murder she wrote played by Angela Lansbury.

Sarah Jessica Parker is an actress mostly known for her for playing Carrie Bradshaw in Sex In The City.

Sarah Jessica Parker is very real lol.

I always thought narwhals were mythical creatures from stories. Only recently learned they actually exist!

I have a preschooler book which has a mythical animal per page. At least, all but one is mythical - along with mermaids, unicorns and dragons they included narwhals! It infuriated me and I sometimes wondered if the author and editor knowingly wrongly included it or genuinely believe it to be mythical.
