For example: The Elgin Marbles. Heard these mentioned from time to time over the years. Always pictured marbles; kids’ marbles. Then I heard they were something to do with Greece and I’ve always thought Elgin was there. Got it all completely wrong

Same but George Ezra.

Same here, until today. Hozier too. Have never seen what they look like, only heard their songs. Love them.

OrigamiOwls · 05/09/2024 02:50

That Billaricay isn't in Spain

Reminds me of something that happened only last weekend!

I am part of a large online quizzing community that started during Covid and we kept going. Quiz on Zoom and I said "Oh, I always get Gnarls Barkley (sp?) mixed up with Cee Lo Green as they sound the same!"

Yeah.....guess who didnt know that GB is a group not a solo artist, that Cee Lo Green is lead singer of...... made a total fart of myself until quite a few others confessed that they didnt know that either! Thats going to be a quiz fact that is now cemented in my brain!

Oh I am sorry but that has really made me laugh! Until Gavin and Stacey I would probably have guessed that Billaricay is in Ireland, or possibly Wales, but Spain?! How did you come to that conclusion?

Absolutely no idea really. Just thought I'd sounded Spanish I guess. I didn't live near Essex, never saw it written on road signs or encounter anything to do with it in every day life so it's true location just passed me by 🤷🏻‍♀️

Yeah it passed me by too so I get it, it was the Spain thing that made me laugh. Funny how the brain works isnt it?!

Shirley Temple was white, but her married name was Shirley Temple Black

Noooooo! Ponies are not small horses, the same way as zebras are not stripy horses!!!

No ponies really are small horses. Or you could say that horses are large ponies. They are the same species (Equus ferus caballus) and while there are different breeds that tend to be referred to as horses or ponies regardless of size, this is all rather arbitrary.

Zebra’s are a completely separate species so there is no comparison there.

SinnerBoy · 05/09/2024 03:44

Well, I've just learned that Roy Orbison wasn't blind; I'm 54!

And I only learned this year that Freddie Flintoff is actually called Andrew, I'd not heard of Andrew before. Can you tell that I have no interest in cricket?

Maybe your brain confused it with Balearics?

Nooooooo!

And I knew someone who had one as a pet. Why don't they sink, if they're full of water?

Puffer fish are only full of water IF they 'inflate' themselves with it to 'puff' up and look big and scary.

They only do this if stressed. If they do this above the water, they will puff up with air, which makes them float and can kill them if they are too stressed to deflate, as they obviously can't breathe.

And yes they have a swim bladder which aids buoyancy.

Yep, although they do have some distinctive features other than size - ie proportionally smaller ears, slightly differently shaped head...

And then there are some horses that are tiny, Falabellas are horses, not ponies.

But they can all interbreed and this is mainly a breed/type distinction not a species distinction.

I haven't read all the posts, but are Andrew and Freddie Flintoff the same person, and a cricketer?

Yes , Freddie is a nickname because of flintstones and the similarity of surnames.

Lavendersquare · 05/09/2024 04:46

Ok, so tonight I've discovered that Andrew and Freddie Flintioff are not only not brothers but they are actually the same person!

I genuinely had no idea!

I certainly knew everything on this thread, many of which are absolutely basic general knowledge which I thought everyone would know, even children would know a lot of it, so it's surprising when adults don't.
If you read widely, both fiction and non-fiction, from childhood onwards, read newspapers, listen to an intelligent radio station eg radio 4 or world service, go to museums, art galleries etc, keep up with a bit of popular culture, have friends and family with wide-ranging interests which they talk about, and grow up in that type of environment, then you're highly likely to have excellent general knowledge.

Gosh, not everyone has been fortunate enough to have the rich and rewarding upbringing you have had - who knew?!

This is supposed to be a lighthearted thread, obviously your vast amount of reading and exposure to lots of interests and intelligent radio stations haven't educated you on the meaning of "lighthearted". You are simply coming across as superior and humourless.

Of course you'd know how a dishwasher worked if it didn't have a window, how utterly ridiculous. What would be the point of rotating spray arms with actual holes in, if not to wash the dishes.
Clearly no one can know everything in the world, but this thread isn't full of obscure difficult knowledge, it's full of utterly basic straightforward general knowledge that people normally pick up on pretty early on in life.

Oh here we go again!! Is it beyond your capability to understand that there are in this world:

a) people who have never owned, or used, a dishwasher

b) people who really aren't interested enough in the workings of one to sit and think about how they work

c) complete and utter bores, of which you are one

I thought he was called pontius pirate not pontius pilate until about a year ago 😳

I've been up with a teething baby all night and this made me howl laughing. Thank you!, 😂

I thought that Pontefract was in Wales - in fact I still think it should be, definitely sounds like a Welsh town to me!

For me it's Oswestry. I still find it very confusing that it's not in Wales!

I remember a post on here, where someone knew a young woman who truly believed sea horses were the size of 'land ' horses!

I was about to say about sea horses. Until I was about 30 I didn't know they were real
Lol at the 2 Flintoff brothers

Harrogate is a seaside resort.

😱

It's not??

I always assumed it was basically like Margate!

DopeyS · 05/09/2024 06:07

@MaidOfAle when you said about coining a phrase it made me think of when I worked in an old printers. The really old printing presses you used to have to put the letters in to a piece of wood to create sentences when you printed posters. The wooden holder was called a 'coin'. Hence the saying 'to coin a new phrase'

MinnieMountain · 05/09/2024 06:13

I thought Shirley Bassey is white until last year.
