Have you seen that Morrisons are talking about putting more staffed checkouts back in their stores?

I'm lucky in that I live in London and can go to any of the big supermarkets (except Waitrose) within a 10 minute drive.

If Morrisons do go ahead with this plan, I will definitely go there more often than I do now (rarely) for a big shop.

I am so exasperated with Sainsburys who expect you to check-out a big shop on a self service till. My local very large store rarely has more than 2 staffed checkouts in operation, when it used to be a 20+ checkout store.

I'll switch my allegiance to Morrisons without a backward glance if they do it!

Asda and Tesco have also mentioned it as soon as one does it they all do it

Thank goodness as the Morrisons self checkout experience is always horrible. I usually need to wait for someone to come and press buttons and it isn't quick.

Plus it's nice to have human contact. (Except in Aldi...they can keep their self checkouts as I can go through at my own speed.....)

Pedallleur · 04/09/2024 19:22

Booths ditched self scan a while back. I suspect too much stuff is going out unpaid for. My local M&S installed new self scan recently and you can adjust your payment to suit your pocket if you see what I mean. Depends on staff vigilance and customer honesty. I just looked at them and thought why would you install these? Anyway, I would like to see more manned checkouts.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/09/2024 19:23

So, would it influence where you shop?

Not if everywhere did it no

Good. I choose a staffed checkout wherever I can. Self checkouts mean job losses as far as I'm concerned. DM worked on checkouts her whole adult life and I'd hate for her or someone like her to be made redundant because of those things

NooNakedJacuzziness · 04/09/2024 19:26

It's nice to have the choice - hope more places do the same

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/09/2024 19:32

Quite. Supermarkets seem chronically understaffed now. Said Sainsburys (my local) seems grubby, untidy and an unpleasant place to be. There's always a queue at the Customer Service desk, the recycling bins are always overflowing, litter outside, not enough trolleys at the store entrance. And there's always some sort of alarm going off, freezers out of order, empty boxes and abandoned purchases on the shelves.

I did go into a Waitrose at the weekend (was outside of my usual neighbourhood) and it was so much cleaner and nicer to be there.

Ah ... I've heard of Booths. It's a lovely chain in the north of England, am I right? Unfortunately none down here in the softy south.

I stopped going to my local Morrisons as the checkout staff were so painfully slow I couldnt bear it compared to Aldi and everything seemed to get even more expensive than the other supermarkets so it wouldnt make me go back but I saw a couple of weeks ago that Asda were changing back and that might tempt me back

Ageney · 04/09/2024 19:38

The thing that would influence my shop is if a shop got rid of both self scan or scan as you go, they’re the only way I do my in person shops!

MigGril · 04/09/2024 19:44

I hurd that apparently they have started doing this in the US already and yes the main reason is loss of profits due to to many customers not paying for everything. So they have decided they need more staff back on the shop floors.

Ordering online will put checkout staff out of jobs not self service checkouts. I've worked retail a long time and home delivery took away in person shopping but created a whole new department full of jobs that didn't exist such as pickers and delivery drivers. If you've ever bought pre packed meat you've taken away the trade from the in store butchers and deli counter. I always find it interesting that people won't use self serve out of principle for people's jobs but have no problem ordering online for home delivery or buying pre packed.

LindorDoubleChoc · 04/09/2024 20:00

Yes, but "pickers" and delivery drivers are still jobs. I'm sure most people now do a mix of online with delivery, and in-store shopping. I get deliveries of the basics occasionally but equally I like to go to a big store and wander the aisles for inspiration. And maybe to pick up an item of clothing, or collect something from Argos, recycle my batteries and plastic bags - that sort of thing that you don't do online.
