Can you swim and ride a bike?

I kind of assumed that most adults (save for those prevented from doing so by health reasons) could swim and ride a bike, but my friend reckons not.

So can you swim (so by that I mean at least a 50 meter length) and ride a bike?

Of course. They are basic life skills and disabilities aside, I'd be concerned if someone couldn't.

DutchCowgirl · 04/09/2024 20:45

My father couldn’t swim or ride a bike. He grew up in a family where nobody bothered to learn him. I never met any other person who couldn’t do both of these things.

Yes. All parents should at least teach their kids this and at an early age too

Yes, both
As can both dc and all my 3 siblings
DH can't swim. Neither can his brother.

Missmarymack2 · 04/09/2024 20:53

Yeh I can do both but have a few friends who can’t swim. I have some colleagues from overseas who can’t ride a bike. Everyone I know from the country I’m from can ride a bike.

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2024 21:10

Yes. I'm trying to think if I know of anyone who can't!

NothingAGoodCuppaDoesntFix · 04/09/2024 21:12

Can't swim.
Can ride bike love bike riding

MinervaMcGonagallsCat · 04/09/2024 21:15

Yes

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 04/09/2024 21:27

Yes to both, I'm always surprised when adults can't do them, not being able to swim seems pretty common.

Tooty78 · 04/09/2024 21:32

Yes I can do both.

LBOCS2 · 04/09/2024 21:33

I can do both, DH can do neither.

LostittoBostik · 04/09/2024 21:34

Yes. But my DH can't swim and my 7yo DD is really struggling to learn both....

spikeandbuffy24 · 04/09/2024 21:38

Can do both but swimming.. I can't do front crawl or anything but I can tread water, breaststroke and comfortable in rivers/reservoir swimming
More paddling than swimming!

spikeandbuffy24 · 04/09/2024 21:38

Oh I forgot, my mum couldn't swim or ride a bike

Eppy123 · 04/09/2024 21:42

Nope, I can do neither. I wasn’t taught as a child and developed a huge fear of water and drowning. Now a parent of a toddler, I take my son swimming every week and will be enrolling him in lessons when he is old enough. And dad will teach him how to ride a bike!

ViciousCurrentBun · 04/09/2024 21:45

I can do both as can DH and DS and both our Mother's could. I used to swim about 100 lengths a week and DH has cycled along the entire length of the Rhine Valley and across France. Needless to say it was when we were much younger. I managed to cycle 16 miles but was all flat a couple of weeks ago. May not seem far but I have quite a few health issues so was feeling pleased with that.

Cynic17 · 04/09/2024 21:46

Can swim (tho not brilliantly).
Can't ride a bike - never could. My parents offered to give me a bike as a child, but I always said "no" because I preferred to spend my time reading - still do.

Deliberationdivinationdesperation · 04/09/2024 21:50

Yes and yes although I haven't ridden a bike in that long that I'm not sure I'd be able to keep my balance anymore!

My husband can swim but never learnt how to ride a bike

BananaPalm · 04/09/2024 21:57

Of course. Both. It's really basic things you should either be taught or to learn yourself when you're old enough to realise it's really basic stuff.

Waitformetoarrive · 04/09/2024 22:05

Yes, can do both. DH and kids can too. Kids learnt to ride a bike without stabilisers quite young and had swimming lessons from when they started in reception, maybe earlier.

GOODCAT · 04/09/2024 22:22

Can do both. Grew up in 70s and our primary school had lessons in a freezing cold pool. Got taught to ride a bike as a kid. Then had a long gap to middle age before I could afford either again. My swimming suffered and I want to take lessons again but now swim and cycle regularly.

LikeWeUsedToBe · 04/09/2024 22:26

I can doggy paddle across a pool but could not do a length.

I can ride a bike if i dont move my head to look around or take my hands off the handle bars. So I'd be dangerous around others. I also can't go slow or I loose my balance.

I tell people i cant do either. My kids have swimming lessons and bikes. As an adult I've not been held back by my lack of ability but it feels unsafe not being able to swim you become very aware of it around water and I hate being responsible for kids near water.

Swam half a mile in the sea today

That’s a life skill I’ve never picked up. Not the sea swimming, the gauging distance. I could say how long I’d swum for but wouldn’t have a clue as to distance.

Neither would I unless I had checked it on a map. Some people also have gps watches that give the same information.

Aproductofmyera80s · 04/09/2024 22:34

Yep… better at the cycling but still fairly good at swimming. Running isn’t my forte though 😂

Sadmamatoday · 04/09/2024 22:48

Yes. I don't swim well, but I can. I was shocked to learn my neices who are now adults can't do either of these things!
