Can you swim and ride a bike?

I kind of assumed that most adults (save for those prevented from doing so by health reasons) could swim and ride a bike, but my friend reckons not.

So can you swim (so by that I mean at least a 50 meter length) and ride a bike?

Yes confidently. Love swimming hate cycling.

AhBiscuits · 04/09/2024 17:57

Yes. I'm not a great swimmer but can do it. I ride my bike to work every day.

BobbyBiscuits · 04/09/2024 17:57

I can swim to an extent. I wouldn't vouch for myself on open water like the sea or a big river. But I can swim lengths in a pool in some fashion. I hate getting my head under water as I'm allergic to chlorine and seawater obviously is disgusting.
I cannot confidently ride a bicycle at all. In fact I'm actively scared of them. But I have ridden a moped and motorbike before. For some reason that's less daunting.

I can, but the people I know who can't do one also can't do the other. I don't know if it's a coordination thing or a lack of childhood opportunity. Both are quite tricky skills to pick up as adult.

PoodlesRUs · 04/09/2024 17:57

I can but I won't.

Pootle40 · 04/09/2024 17:58

Yes to both. Although of my parents and in laws generation (ie 70+) none of the women can swim and were never taught. My mother in law says she can't ride a bike either.

CommunistOrca · 04/09/2024 17:59

Yes, I can do both. DH can't swim.

Mandarinaduck · 04/09/2024 17:59

I can ride a bike but have only learnt to swim recently, in middle age (i did have lessons as a child but didn’t get as far as swimmming lengths.).

NowImNotDoingIt · 04/09/2024 18:00

I can swim, I can't ride a bike.

Octavia64 · 04/09/2024 18:00

Older adults in the U.K. may not be able to swim - in the 1950s before the polio vaccine many parents didn't let their children swim as polio transmission was known to happen at swimming pools.

My dad learned to swim at 30 in the 1970s as a result, July mum's parents didn't care and she learnt as a child. She is now 78.

Yes but not at the same time.

Me too😂

AskingForAFriend12 · 04/09/2024 18:02

Yes, I can't think of an adult I know who can't.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 04/09/2024 18:02

I can swim but the last time I tried to ride a bike I fell off several times and broke my hand. I was off work for weeks!

Ineedaholidayyyy · 04/09/2024 18:02

I'm a weak swimmer , can probably so about a length at best but I've figured it's because I hold my breath when swimming! I could benefit from some adult lessons as if I got into any danger, I'd be in trouble

Cycling I have no problem with.

BatshitIsTheOnlyExplanation · 04/09/2024 18:02

I can. And run. But there's no way I could do a triathalon, even one of the baby ones!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 04/09/2024 18:02

I can do both reasonably well as can DH and both dc

MonsteraMama · 04/09/2024 18:03

I'm a good swimmer, but I have no idea if I can ride a bike. I think I must've been 15 the last time I did. I suppose it's not something you forget how to do so I imagine I could still do it.

sonjadog · 04/09/2024 18:04

Yes, I can do both. I think most people I know can, although to be fair I haven't really asked around. We all learnt as children, I think.

Rubyandscarlett · 04/09/2024 18:04

Yes and l do both regularly. DH can't swim though

InfoSecInTheCity · 04/09/2024 18:06

Yes

I swim often and enjoy it.

I can ride a bike but hate it, I have awful balance, am pretty much blind in one eye and find it terrifying, also I think I must have a particularly bony arse because it's always uncomfortable.

Floralnomad · 04/09/2024 18:06

Yes , don’t like or enjoy doing either but I’m perfectly competent

CanYouHearThatNoise · 04/09/2024 18:06

I can't do either - I did learn to swim about 7 years ago, on a week's holiday, but lost my nerve later and haven't tried since. Never had a bike when I was a kid, never learned. In my 60s now

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 04/09/2024 18:07

@Ferne88 only if I use tampax!! (according to the old advert!)😂

BlueEyedLeucy · 04/09/2024 18:08

Yeah, I can do both - they are my exercise of choice!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 04/09/2024 18:08

Yes, that was my problem as well as not wanting to put my face under water (as I'd always hold my breath and stress, and then end up inhaling water)! And yes, it was sorted in a few sessions - I think I had block-booked 10 lessons, but that was sufficient and I've done triathlons and swimming 1 or 2 km in open water a couple of times a week in summer/autumn.
