For what? To live? To go on holiday?

Fishcake18 · 04/09/2024 15:15

Depends what you are looking for.. Whitstable is closer by train to London -1hr but house prices more.. Margate further (1.45 hours) cheaper housing, some social issues, sandy beaches.. both coastal towns with pros and cons.. need more info.

Two completely different towns, and at the opposite ends of the economic scale. Whistable house prices are, well, pricey, whilst Margate are a lot cheaper (although increasing).

Whistable is a nice little town, that gets busy with tourists. It also has a shingles beach. It’s full of character.

Margate was considered a dump in the past, but has improved. It has a huge sandy beach and the seafront shops are quite nice now. Further away from the seafront, it’s not so well re-generated. The Turner exhibition and Dreamland has boosted the economy.

What is it you’re looking for?

Other Kent seaside towns to consider - Deal, Folkstone, Rye (across the border) or maybe Worthing (not in Kent also).

@LittleOwl153 so sorry, I didn't put the most important part in. It's for a holiday.

Different vibes to the town - what are you looking for?

If a holiday whitstable is much nicer than Margate which can be very rough in places

Margate's old town is rather lovely, we were there in august for a few days and had a wonderful time.

Yes the arcades and cheap stuff line the front element along from the train station which I don't think is a bad thing, we hand a lot of fun in the arcades! But there are some excellent restaurants and cafes now if you head into the old town.

The beach is glorious on a sunny day, beautiful sand and very clean.
