How much do you spend per month?

Steppingintome · 04/09/2024 08:53

me and DH were having a conversation about how much we are spending per month (too much like most people) so I’m not asking how much you earn but ..

How much are your monthly outgoings each month? Not including large purchases like holidays.
How big is your family?
Where abouts in the country do you live?

we live in the north of England. 3 adults and 2 teenagers and we spend just over 4K a month

Around £5-5.5k a month, though it fluctuates. South East, two adults and two preschoolers. I tend to pay for holidays by putting a bit away each month so that would be included in that total. Mortgage just under £2k a month so a significant portion of that.

TheChosenTwo · 04/09/2024 09:05

About 6k as our basic direct debits (many of which are totally optional luxuries but we choose to have them so they are included in our outgoings). Family of 5, SE.
Food/haircuts/days out/clothes etc aren’t included as they all vary.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 04/09/2024 09:13

£3.5k ish, but mortgage is £1800 of that.

Wwyd2025 · 04/09/2024 09:41

Around 3k a month just acquired a allotment though so having to spend on that to get it how we want it so I'd say 3.5k at the moment.

I'm a Single mum in the south of England, with one teen ds.

I typically spend £1550 a month on food, regular bills, mortgage. £750 a month on school fees.

Then stuff like clothes, holidays and the occasional thing for the house are extra.

Kitkat1523 · 04/09/2024 10:20

2 adults…..1500 a month…..no holidays or clothes included in that

andymary · 04/09/2024 10:22

Two adults, no children, in the Midlands.

Household Bills (inc Mortgage and Mounjaro) £2300
Food Shopping £500
Savings £450
Total £3250

Our savings are not like 'rainy day' savings though, they are more like budgeted long-term things. So it goes into separate pots where we put XX amount in for Christmas, XX amount for pets, XX amount for car service/mot/insurance etc, things like that.
Food shopping is also more if it's a 5 week month.

Thank you for all your replies. It’s quite interesting to know what ‘normal families’ spend to live each month and kind of reassuring to know we are not the only ones who seem to be spending more. I think the government and social media skew our outlook a bit xx

South East, 2 adults, £1100 per month.

South East, 2 adults, £1100 per month.

Is that for Just ‘running the home’ or all of your spending?

If so, that’s very impressive and frugal.

BloodandGlitter · 04/09/2024 13:13

1400 ish? 3 adults 2 children east midlands.

Killingoffmyflowersonebyone · 04/09/2024 13:16

2 adults, 1 child but five dogs - spend about £2.2K a month (South East). That includes mortgage, bills, commuting, food etc.

Doesn’t include holidays. Save about the £3K as we’re incredibly frugal.

DancingLions · 04/09/2024 13:23

2 Adults in London.
£1700 covers rent (SH), all bills and food.
The rest is for saving/holidays/spending money.

ThatTealViewer · 04/09/2024 13:25

London. Me, DH and a toddler. £3k mortgage + overpayment, £265 council tax, £700 childminder, £500 general bills, £500 groceries. So, about £5K? Then DH and I get £1K ‘play money’ each, so £7K.

That doesn’t include clothes, holidays, random expenses, though.

mushypaperstraws · 04/09/2024 13:49

£2k a month covers two adults and one dog for every outgoing except holidays, where we spend £2k a year - in west midlands

That is including all spending, which admittedly I don't do a lot of 😂

FirstTimeHomeowner · 04/09/2024 15:26

We're circa £2k ~ 1 adult 1 child for all bills (1,300ish) food (500) and fun (200). That being said we've been saving like crazy to buy a house and now that's nearly done 🤞 I think we're likely to go up to around £4K.

Caspianberg · 04/09/2024 15:47

About €4000. Mortgage is half of that, then bills, food, transport etc

Same for us. Two adults, no mortgage, SE. All bills, food, 'living stuff', maybe a dinner out, maybe a few takeaways.

Elizo · 04/09/2024 16:08

3k pcm one DS, single parent. Is tight with a significant mortgage.

I spend all my benefits in three weeks then try and sit in silence meditating for the last seven days. It doesn't usually work.

Goldmember · 04/09/2024 16:16

Monthly Fixed costs: £1250 (mortgage, insurance, utilities, tv/phone, travel)

Variable costs: (food, clothes, school, going out, household stuff, health etc) ~£1000

Spends for Dh and I £250 each = £500 (beauty, clothes over above basics, hobbies, treats etc.)

So approx £2750pm.

Apolloneuro · 04/09/2024 16:17

Two adults. No mortgage. About £2000
