How much do you spend per month?

Steppingintome · 04/09/2024 08:53

me and DH were having a conversation about how much we are spending per month (too much like most people) so I’m not asking how much you earn but ..

How much are your monthly outgoings each month? Not including large purchases like holidays.
How big is your family?
Where abouts in the country do you live?

we live in the north of England. 3 adults and 2 teenagers and we spend just over 4K a month

I spend my entire monthly income which is around, £2300. One adult and one teenager. Rent and bills make up around £1000. Food around £400. Rest of the money goes on whatever we need, clothes and haircuts etc, then fun stuff.

South East, 2 adults, £1100 per month.

Blimey, our mortgage is more than that!

Bbqnights · 04/09/2024 16:33

About £5,000 - £5,500. Family of 4. That includes holidays.

Ineedwinenow · 04/09/2024 16:41

2 adults here in the East Midlands, we spend around 6k so that’s mortgage, holiday home, all bills and food. We have separate monies for savings and personal spends/entertainment

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 04/09/2024 16:44

£300 on recurring payments - phone, gym, contacts, uni fees etc., my pension and s&s isa

£150 on mounjaro

£300-500 into savings

The rest generally goes on transport, food etc

OldTinHat · 04/09/2024 16:48

Just me. £300 on bills a month and about £150 on food.

LeedsZebra90 · 04/09/2024 16:53

Excluding money set aside for holidays that we pay monthly we spend around 3k. 2 adults, 3 primary school aged kids.

LadyInDecline · 04/09/2024 16:53

Many families (mine included) don't have a monthly income of anywhere near 4k.

Family of 2 adults, and two teens 17 and 19

Total monthly costs are £2000

Do you have no rent or mortgage or council tax?

eggplant16 · 04/09/2024 16:54

I spent £70.00 on a few bits on Sunday.

nextdoornightmares · 04/09/2024 17:25

We're in Scotland. 2 adults, 2 primary aged kids, 1 toddler.

Earned income is around £2200 and benefit income is around the same so £4400 total.

Our outgoings are roughly

Mortgage - £1200
Nursery - £500
Grocery shopping - £450
Bills - £400
Council tax - £220
Diesel - £150
Then other miscellaneous spending around £200 but sometimes more depending on the month like if there's a birthday etc.

Did ya? 😁
it soon adds up doesn’t it…..you go in For a pint a milk and before you know it ….70 quid….gone…just like that….I’ve done it myself

imforeverblowingbuttons · 04/09/2024 18:37

Around 4.5k. Three kids, live in the north, low mortgage

London. Me, DH and a toddler. £3k mortgage + overpayment, £265 council tax, £700 childminder, £500 general bills, £500 groceries. So, about £5K? Then DH and I get £1K ‘play money’ each, so £7K.

That doesn’t include clothes, holidays, random expenses, though.

Similar total figure but we ‘only’ have £100 play money each though. Wondering what your play money goes on ( being nosey)?

Edited

For me: clothes, going out with friends (theatre, dinner, drinks, comedy), Uber (I don’t drive), coffees + lunch (I’m on maternity leave, I spend a lot of time in cafes and at lunch), grooming (mani pedis, hair, nails, waxing) and the occasional random purchase (I do love a nice vase).

I assume DH spends his on similar. ‘Frittering away’ would be a completely fair description, tbh.

BaublesRocking · 04/09/2024 21:25

2 adults, 1 teen, we have £5500 a month coming in and the same amount going back out! We don't save anything and £1500 of that is on debt, £1800 on mortgage.

Yes lentils and oats and a chicken to last a week. Bit FFS, somethimes you just get sick of it.

Steppingintome · 04/09/2024 22:00

Seems like most peoples biggest outgoings are food and mortgage. I know the feeling of just popping for milk and spending £70! DH made a comment about not leaving the house without spending £30 the other day!

For those who’s outgoings are high do you have a comfortable amount of savings?

itsallbowlsbaby · 04/09/2024 22:22

Bring home almost £7k a month. £2k bills. £2k fun and food. £2.5k savings.

Passthecake30 · 04/09/2024 22:36

£3.5k for 2 adults 2 teens. Includes mortgage of £500. Doesn’t include holidays and usually another £1.5k over Xmas.

RaininSummer · 04/09/2024 22:51

About 1500 for two of us unless unexpected or house reno costs are involved.

eggplant16 · 05/09/2024 10:32

Some of these figures are absolutely wild to me. Thousands of pounds on Christmas and fun. I can't get my head around it somehow.
Makes for an interesting read.
Per month I probably spend about 1k on bills and 400 on not bills.
