How much do you spend per month?

me and DH were having a conversation about how much we are spending per month (too much like most people) so I’m not asking how much you earn but ..

How much are your monthly outgoings each month? Not including large purchases like holidays.
How big is your family?
Where abouts in the country do you live?

we live in the north of England. 3 adults and 2 teenagers and we spend just over 4K a month

Just me, no mortgage or rent but still have significant fees to pay (strata fees, council tax etc etc). Spend equivalent of 2000 pounds a month, with everything included (and 2 holidays a year). Able to save about half my income but sick of my job so thinking about packing it in!

OnNaturesCourse · 05/09/2024 11:50

Income is approx 2000 monthly

Every penny is spent with no savings or extras

Our main spends are
Rent 650
Council tax 150
Car payment 420
Electric and gas 160
Broadband 40
Mobile 40
Kids activities 100
SO THAT'S 1560 (78%) ON "MAIN" DIRECT DEBITS

The rest (440) is food, fuel, occasionally essentials like clothes/shoes, debts and smaller payments like per insurance, home insurance, 1 TV subscription etc.

2 adults, 2 children, 1 pet and baby due.

Its tight. Money truly sucks.

TheStroppyFeminist · 05/09/2024 12:33

Outgoings about £5.6k, that's just direct debits
Food about £1600
Eating out about £1k
There are 5 of us
Income luckily a lot more than that
South East

eggplant16 · 05/09/2024 13:58

Am I reading this right? A thousand pounds per month on eating out?

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 05/09/2024 14:04

About £6.5k per month, which thinking about it is ridiculous as our mortgage is less than £1k.

SecondFavouriteDinosaur · 05/09/2024 14:05

Should have said we’re a family of 5.

Tdcp · 05/09/2024 14:08

2 adults 1 child and 2 cats, at the moment it's about 2.2k a month all in. Rent is £700. We're buying a house so it'll go up a bit as the mortgage will be about £1k a month.

Steppingintome · 05/09/2024 14:20

Really interesting. This is partly why I posted the thread because we are aware some have wildly huge ‘fun’ budgets and some seem to struggle even though salaries aren’t wildly different or sometimes ones with big budgets have smaller incomes. It really interests me. Maybe should have studied this at uni instead of science and maybe id have been happier with my thousands of pounds student debt haha!

Single mother or two teens,
Rent £450
C tax £110
Utilities £125
Sky £108
Gym £90
Fuel 120
Food £500
Saving £250
Shares £100
Insurance £48
Water £30
Subscriptions £15
Voluntary Donations £12

£1833 round up to 2k and have roughly £2500 left over for everything else. Not sure where it goes!!

ViciousCurrentBun · 05/09/2024 15:15

No mortgage or childcare, we spent close to 24k last year. So 2k per month but that was for everything, includes running one car.

Thank you for being so detailed. Are the shares a long term investment?

Single woman living on the south coast. Mortgage was paid off many years ago. Total outgoings per month about £1,000.

Fudgetheparrot · 06/09/2024 19:00

Two adults, child and a baby. £1200 on bills and direct debits and then about £1000 on food, petrol, clothes, days out, etc.

needhelpwiththisplease · 06/09/2024 19:18

2 adults, NW with no mortgage.
Bills about £500
Food £300

Saggyknickers · 13/02/2025 09:21

Beauty: £1301.20 (waxing, Botox, hair colour, etc)

How on earth do you spend that on waxing, botox, hair?

Im in one of the most expensive areas in the country and my hair is £120 a month, botox is £250 every 3 months and waxing costs about £40.

Are you also bathing in liquid gold?

CoastalCalm · 13/02/2025 09:24

2 adults NE £2,500 half of which is mortgage (12 payments left !)

budgiegirl · 13/02/2025 09:51

Around £3800 max, usually less, per month - family of 5 adults (one at uni, 2 living at home).

No mortgage, but this includes everything else - utilities, council tax, car loans, phones, sky tv and broadband, interest free loans for furniture, food, petrol, gym, cinema passes, going out, clothes, hair cuts, gifts, car servicing and insurance etc. The only thing it doesn't include is savings, holidays, or larger home improvements which we save for.
