Am I just paranoid...

Or do more and more organisations use disappearing emails? It's driving me nuts!

I just applied for a virgin credit card balance transfer via money saving expert (so as confident as I could be that it was legit) and they sent loads of emails asking me to complete the application by submitting further info via a link. Which I did after a few days. No confirmation email and now all of the emails have disappeared and I've no proof anywhere that I applied or way of finding out the outcome for sure. I had to submit a photo of my driving licence and it's really disconcerting and making me feel like I may have been had. I've had to check 3 different email accounts to check and double check - nothing. Fine if they don't want to give me one, but can't they just say sorry, not this time. How can it be they can delete emails after they've been recieved and opened. Feels all kinds of wrong....or have I just had my data nicked?

Never heard of that OP. If you have checked all your emails and none are there I would write to the money saving people and ask them since it was from one of their links.

Good luck.

EDIT - actually was it a proper link or did you mistake an advert on their page for one. Not all adverts are legit. Can you go back and look (and see the url)?

Thanks yes it does sound dodgy doesn't it. It was a proper link after doing one of their comparisons. Good idea to contact MSE, thank you.

I've noticed before though- I've had all my statement emails from one of the most notorious energy suppliers who tried to tell me I owed them £900 disappear and then or the period in question weren't available on my online account. Luckily I had saved them all anyway and could argue it, but I am beginning to feel like it's a thing!

https://uk.virginmoney.com/ was the link which seems pretty legit to me.

I'm not on my laptop so can't see urls properly but if emails are disappearing from other companies then it sounds as though your email itself is compromised. When did you last change the password for it? There's been quite a few data breaches lately.

Sploodge · 03/09/2024 22:14

Yes perhaps that's the thing to do, it has been a while.

I just wondered if some of these big organisations are able to send emails which self destruct after a certain time so you can't follow up on anything. Should be a crime.

No they can't however it's reasonably well known that hackers can act as middlemen through emails. They intercept from one place before sending it on to the recipient. Then they intercept it's return. The best known one is where house solicitors ask for the new house deposit and send a link. The money ends up in hackers account and the solicitor and buyer blame each other for missing money until the bank gets involved, by then hundreds of thousands of pounds have disappeared overseas.

Change your password, or better still use another one for sensitive information like banking until you are happy your emails are no longer getting deleted.

You can search yourself but here's one so you understand what I'm trying to say
