Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Can someone explain the fascination with “old money” to me? Why is wealth you inherited from ancestors (who may have made it from exploiting serfs, slaves, colonies) seen as superior to wealth you earned yourself through business or a profession or a trade?

It’s usually the realm of those butthurt at ‘new money’ getting above themselves and wanting to remind them of their true place - below them in social totem pole.

I’ve found a lot of people outraged at the injustice of the class system are suddenly quick to reinforce it when wanting to asset themselves as ‘classier’ in comparison to the flashy upstarts.

Money does what money wants to do. Old money is quite willing and able to be just as ‘flashy’ as new, but the stereotypes invariable prevail because people want to believe in them.

@OssieShowman we always have a laugh when I buy a vienetta too. It was rarely bought in my childhood home we got the 4ltr black & gold Neapolitan if we were lucky 🤣. We do have posh people in Australia, they all speak like Malcolm Turnbull and all went to one of 6 elite schools but we also have a shit tonne of cashed up bogans too who are entirely different - miners, tradies done good, those types. Not sure what the equivalent is in the UK. If I think of posh people they’re invariably English and have big country estates and dogs and shooting weekends. It’s all a bit like a Jilly Cooper novel in my mind 😄

I’ve never heard of it. Have just googled but where are they?!

UK wide.

Because it's generations of good breeding dahling. You can't just get it, it's exclusivity. Haven't you heard the saying, "money can't buy class".

ImustLearn2Cook · 04/09/2024 05:16

Wearing Tommy Hilfiger or Ralph Loren clothing. It’s like a uniform that is supposed to make you look like you belong to the wealthy elite and a recent graduate of an expensive prep school.

Sorry I'm useless with these but I am hoping someone can help me with this, does anyone remember in the 90s posh bottles in kitchens, I think it was oil with peppers in, but in oval shapes? I always used to think anyone who had show oil was practically best pals with the queen.
I mentioned it to DP last week and he doesn't remember seeing them anywhere. He said his grandmother had a bath oil she never used and it was a posh bottle.
If anyone knows what I'm on about and can tell me if they were posh I'd be grateful.

Also I think the bottle lid often had twine around it or a ribbon?

We collected these had them all displayed on a dresser thing DH made 😂 who knew I was posh.

Clapham

😂😂

Witchinawell · 04/09/2024 06:02

What I dont understand is the shiny new, massive, specced up Range Rovers parked outside the grottiest houses or tiny little new builds. They must cost a fortune, why would you twat your money up the wall with a car and not put it on your mortgage repayments / kids savings instead ??

Who are Miller and Carter?

Pub chain - Fried salad and skin-on fries

kiddietaxi · 04/09/2024 06:25

Surely most of these things are just nouveau riche conspicuous overconsumption. Personally I think a big one is any kind of plastic surgery or cosmetic work involving needles (botox, fillers, etc).

Prosecco can in fact be delicious.

Not that the delicious stuff is easy to find.

Prosecco is never posh
Or palatable

I recall something about snails being used to create a beauty product and it was mega bucks.

Well I've eaten dragon fruit in several Asian countries, it's always included in the fruit salad in hotel breakfasts and I'm still not buying it. Tasteless and pointless.

As are blueberries
Like a disappointing lover

Ok so here we get quite close to the heart of the issue and of where this thread is veering off piste: high fashion and posh aren’t the same thing . Nor is expensive and posh. Posh people sometimes have expensive stuff but only because it genuinely does the job better . Fashion doesn’t come into it … and is normally kept out of it.

I beg to differ. Fashion and people's poshness/ "status" does indeed go hand in hand. Anyway the thread is called posh things that are now common - Louboutins definitely fit that, they are now ubiquitous and very much were seen as for the weathly but now every Joe public has them ... real or not!

As mentioned numerous times in the thread, big logos - red soles say look at me, I've spent X.

Louboutins don't do the job better, they are uncomfortable and you have to levitate to keep them looking decent.

Media walls
Grey or black UVPC windows/sofits/fascias
LED lighting in fascia boards/on staircases
Gucci
Louis Vuitton
Ralph Lauren
Tommy Hilfiger
Just...anything obviously branded
Talking about money...how much things cost etc
Bleached white teeth
Being so obsessed with your flooring that it makes you anti-social to guests
Hot-tubs
Tiki/Garden Bars
Sushi
Fake grass
Door Bows

What is a media wall?

Not one single person on earth thinks door bows are posh!

Bighair70 · 04/09/2024 06:41

Airport lounges
Prosecco
Molton brown
Radley/L Viton (sp!)/chloe/gucci bags

Yes I bought my mum a bottle of the chilli oil type thing for Xmas when I was a teenager - maybe around 1997. I thought it was super posh at the time but I was only 15 so I forgive myself. I don't think my mum was very impressed

We had some but it was used, it was chilli oil. Like you described, I think it was a bit expensive but not quite as effective as chilli flakes in the end, think maybe they were harder to get hold of back in the day?

Labradors and spaniels
Hand me down furniture
Having a special bucket to catch the drips from the leaky roof of your hand me down house.
Having any new car unless a hand me down or found in the barn.
New clothes, unless the labrador or spaniel have chewed them beyond repair or fit for company.

Don’t come for the Labradors 😭

Going to a Russell Group university
Having very tall children who 'eat like horses'
Charterhouse
Belfast sinks
Being related to a Freud
Skiing anywhere outside France
Having a food intolerance
Voting Tory
Shop bought engagement rings
Bill Nighy
Scotland

How on earth is Charterhouse common?

How is radley in the same category as the other bags listed 😂

@ThePrologue

Prosecco is never posh
Or palatable

Prosecco is simply Italian sparkling wine. Like any other wine, sparkling or not, there is good Prosecco and not so good Prosecco.

It certainly isn't categorically bad as you suggest.

Your comment is peak common trying to sound posh!
