Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

Can someone explain the fascination with “old money” to me? Why is wealth you inherited from ancestors (who may have made it from exploiting serfs, slaves, colonies) seen as superior to wealth you earned yourself through business or a profession or a trade?

Nicky Haslem is a man btw

And isn’t his name Haslam?

I haven't read all the thread but I am yet to see anything that I would actually call posh in the first place

Unless you mean Ferrari's or mansions

Are hot tubs or fake tan ever posh?

Yes. It’s an odd thread.

MSLRT · 03/09/2024 22:43

What a ridiculous generalisation. Bit of jealousy there I think.

Anyway they often snowboard.

Show oil 🤣

It's now known as stunt oil and its my mission to get one 😂

Labradors and spaniels
Hand me down furniture
Having a special bucket to catch the drips from the leaky roof of your hand me down house.
Having any new car unless a hand me down or found in the barn.
New clothes, unless the labrador or spaniel have chewed them beyond repair or fit for company.

Funniest post of the thread Smile

The point being the correct spelling is crystal .

Cristal is champagne.

Um, yes? That was my point that seems to have whooshed over your head. But thanks anyway.

Thus the point about the 2014. Which is very good indeed.

My mum used to make her own - I think she used to put garlic cloves, chilli and rosemary or something in it. Normal shaped bottle though - but with a drizzle thing on it 😂

LadyGabriella · 03/09/2024 22:23

Chandeliers. Aspirational but mostly end up looking tacky af.

I think it depends. The all-glass/ all crystal ones look off. But a proper eighteenth century chandelier with a good balance of bronze and crystal and a bit of patina can be just right provided the ceiling height is sufficient.

You are all quite, quite magnificently bonkers. Why does anyone need to pretend they are better than ....x? We are just very ordinarily ordinary.

This ^

Thistooshallpass24 · 04/09/2024 01:48

@EdithBond none of those are considered "posh"

Christian louboutins

I used to want some but now every Z list/ influencer wears them.

Ok so here we get quite close to the heart of the issue and of where this thread is veering off piste: high fashion and posh aren’t the same thing . Nor is expensive and posh. Posh people sometimes have expensive stuff but only because it genuinely does the job better . Fashion doesn’t come into it … and is normally kept out of it.

Detailed / clean cars (obviously not going the stables or the country estate enough).

Agree with PP - massive driveways with no greenery.

I know not a single genuinely posh person who would have no greenery along their driveway.

CherryValley5 · 04/09/2024 00:54

What exactly do you think you may be inhaling whilst out in public then?

But at least outside there is wind and rain to ameliorate this and also more air to dilute the effect.

Calliopespa · 04/09/2024 01:59

DoloresHargreeves · 03/09/2024 20:58

Do you really think that an M&S food shop is tacky? Why?

Yes that had me a bit 🤨.

Their fruit and veg is the best of any supermarket chain by a long way. Second only to proper greengrocers.

Thistooshallpass24 · 04/09/2024 01:48

Let’s see who’s at the Oasis gigs - I’d wager the Glastonbury winnebago mob, who’re back working at Deloitte on the Tuesday

mondaytosunday · 04/09/2024 02:09

@Gloriiaa posh people do refer to other people as posh - they never think they themselves are though, no matter what their lineage or how big their family estate is! And the never heard anyone refer to people as 'smart' unless they were talking about clothing ('that's a smart outfit').

Gingerkittykat · 04/09/2024 02:19

Paying more than a couple if quid on handwash.

Hugely expensive mostly adult advent calendars containing perfumes, other beauty products, booze and god knows what else.

GrannyRose15 · 04/09/2024 02:23

A girlfriend of my son’s once described us as posh because we sometimes had wine with our meal and owned a teapot.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2024 02:35

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 21:47

Posh people don't care & would think you v odd & mark you out as 'common'

The ideas about what "posh" people care and don't care about on threads like these are always hilarious.

mathanxiety · 04/09/2024 02:40

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 21:56

But these are..posh things. Title is what is supposedly posh but are actually 'common' 😉

These are not "posh" things. They are boring, performative middle class, "attitude" things.

AspiringChatBot · 04/09/2024 02:48

I always think this too.

OssieShowman · 04/09/2024 03:12

We have this ice cream in Australia, called VIENETTA
Its log shaped, really really soft vanilla ice cream, with a base of crisp chocolate, layers of chocolate through it, then crisp chocolate drizzled over the top.
I grew up thinking it was very Posh. Special occasions only.
then, same when my children were young.
I have now introduced it to my grand children, and they are in awe.
It only costs about $8 a box. But I’m so happy it continues the tradition of being Posh.
