Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

You might want to heed the trigger warning 😉

Putting a “trigger warning” doesn’t make you any less of a ###T

I’ll let you figure out the ###T 😉

blueshoes · 03/09/2024 21:46

I do.

You clearly have never tasted toast made in a top of the range Morphy Richards

Ugh. Terribly common. If it’s not a D&G / SMEG toaster then it’s not worth buying

Babbahabba · 03/09/2024 21:46

Another one asking why "old money" is so impressive? Accident of birth. At least "new money" has been earned by them.

The word posh, ' posh' people say smart

Cleaning your house or talking about cleaning or being even remotely concerned whether other people think their house is clean

Saying ' my' kitchen etc

New cars

' Snobbery ' is incidentally not something that ' posh' people concern themselves with, ironically a lot of 'posh' people were brought up with the etiquette to be polite/ engaging with whoever they come across, they are not obsessed with class, they are comfortable with who they are &;would find this thread to be in bad taste.

@Gloriiaa

'my kitchen'

i don't understand? What's wrong with calling it 'my' kitchen?

Gloriiaa · 03/09/2024 21:47

LondonFox · 03/09/2024 20:28

I have wood and tiles floor and I force all my guests to take off shoes and use guest slippers.
Why would you want all the grimm and shit from the streets spread around your home? 🤢

Posh people don't care & would think you v odd & mark you out as 'common'

I thought this when that PP posted it….thought it was cruel and totally unnecessary

The whole thread is cruel and unnecessary. Typing ‘lighthearted’ in the title is on a par with saying “No offence, but…”

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 03/09/2024 21:47

What this thread actually proves is that no one on MN has a clue about what’s posh and what’s not.

It is derived from the ships that carried passengers out to the east - the cooler side was on the port side and starboard on the return journey. Post Outward Starboard Home

Urban myth, as are all 'backronyms'.

brunettemic · 03/09/2024 21:48

Why are exercising and going to Disney World “common”?

Benvolio · 03/09/2024 21:49

Gap year package trips purporting to be charitable, eg: fly to Costa Rica to chuck baby turtles back in the sea then visit an orphanage.

Lwrenn, ALDI would deffo have stunt oil at Christmas!

I am going to have to get some, I've just googled decorative oils and found some brilliant ones, so retro and utterly pointless! I hope aldi or lidl have them, I'll be so happy!
Usually at Christmas my greedy snout is in the mince pie aisle 😂

Stunt oil hasn't half tickled me!

I’ve actually never heard of Miller & Carter until tonight.
It’s clearly a restaurant, someone mentioned Harvester?

It's a steak restaurant. They took over lots of Harvesters. To be honest, although it's obviously not upmarket, the food is consistently good at our local one and we visit quite regularly for family lunches. It's just a bog standard place to eat really.

I'm adding Michelin starred restaurants to my list. The food at all of our local ones is always disappointing and cold. I'd never willingly go to any of them but they are often booked by aspirational friends for their celebrations. The food is so bland and the atmosphere dull, I can only think that people go because they think it's "posh". Then brag that they've been. Which to me is common.

Of course there will be excellent Michelin places, I know. But just call them by their name. Not "I'm going to* *....it's got a Michelin Star, you know."

Afternoon Tea. It's a treat. Not posh.

Bananagirl23 · 03/09/2024 21:49

Seeing being ‘posh’ as something to aspire to rather than the outdated anachronism it really is

CherryValley5 · 03/09/2024 21:31

Trust me, you don’t fall into dressage by accident - nor is anyone getting a loan approved to buy a horse.

😂

So what is the etymology of the word posh, if not that?

I’m convinced that Mumsnet these days is full of Hyacinth Bucket types. The real classy birds left a long time ago.

Funerals with carriages and horses.

Your comment is absolutely awful…how did you feel when you pressed the post button? Many funerals like that are usually because it has been a tragic death …hang your head in shame @Thindog

Blingy home decor.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 03/09/2024 21:50

So what is the etymology of the word posh, if not that?

It's of Romani origin, denoting a coin of high value.

Papyrophile · 03/09/2024 21:52

OH dear.. I have a personal plate (from a few days ago) but still have a big dog.
