Supposedly ’posh’ things you think are common *trigger warning this is light hearted*

Obviously lighthearted and no need to explain your rational. But what are things that some people consider high end/ posh/ classy/ aspirational (I know they are not necessarily the same thing) that you don’t like/ think are tacky/ common / etc.

Again this is light hearted. We can complain but we must never explain!!!!!!

Here is my list.

Molton Brown hand wash
M&S food shop
American Style Fridges
Having a tan
Talking about exercising
Beauty Advent Calendars
Designer toasters and kettles
House of Fraser department stores
Posting photos from 1st class travel on instagram
Referring to your car by its brand name
Talking about your ‘forever home’
Shopping in Space NK
Visiting Disney World
Listening to Classic FM

i don't understand? What's wrong with calling it 'my' kitchen?

It's common! 😂 it's The kitchen, the house etc, it's never ' my lounge ' either btw😝

LLresident · 03/09/2024 21:53

Being overly polite and saying thank you a million times to whoever made you a coffee
Audis

Not ironing your kid’s uniforms

Why are exercising and going to Disney World “common”?

You don't understand why Disney World is thought to be common? I mean, it's the height of lowest-common-denominator destinations, no?

Spomb · 03/09/2024 21:54

Things that are popular that I consider beneath me.

Sorry I'm useless with these but I am hoping someone can help me with this, does anyone remember in the 90s posh bottles in kitchens, I think it was oil with peppers in, but in oval shapes? I always used to think anyone who had show oil was practically best pals with the queen.
I mentioned it to DP last week and he doesn't remember seeing them anywhere. He said his grandmother had a bath oil she never used and it was a posh bottle.
If anyone knows what I'm on about and can tell me if they were posh I'd be grateful.

Also I think the bottle lid often had twine around it or a ribbon?

Yes!!! I remember this. And also coloured rice or pasta in a fancy bottle/jar.

kids in designer clothing.
hunter wellies.
large logos on clothing.
Designer bags
Range Rover even tho I used to own one and now really miss it.
Blingy home decor.
center parcs- expensive but definitely not posh, our dog friendly lodge was bogging!

Aww I used to love Hunter wellies until the quality took a nosedive.

I am going to have to get some, I've just googled decorative oils and found some brilliant ones, so retro and utterly pointless! I hope aldi or lidl have them, I'll be so happy!
Usually at Christmas my greedy snout is in the mince pie aisle 😂

Stunt oil hasn't half tickled me!

I'm having a de ja vu moment of someone on MN years and years ago talking about stunt pineapples. I think it was when people dress their kitchens for estate agents' photo shoots or fill their fruit bowls with exotic fruits to look impressive and healthy, but no-one ever eats it.

Benvolio · 03/09/2024 21:55

People (newspapers) using 'tragic' as code for 'death'. Any euphemism for death.

Dorisbonson · 03/09/2024 21:56

Gold taps, chandeliers, peacocks, Bentleys - more like footballers wives.

Kitkat1523 · 03/09/2024 21:56

Just googled miller and carter locations….this is why only us northerners have heard of them🤣🤣

It is derived from the ships that carried passengers out to the east - the cooler side was on the port side and starboard on the return journey. Post Outward Starboard Home

Did you know that there is zero factual proof of this?

CallMeMousie · 03/09/2024 21:21

Dressage
Wafting around the garden in a nightie
Chickens in the kitchen
Hiding the TV in a cupboard to pretend it doesn't exist
Too many dogs
Whippets
Ballet pumps
Antiques
Children with messy hair

But these are..posh things. Title is what is supposedly posh but are actually 'common' 😉

locket2009 · 03/09/2024 21:56

All inclusive holidays

Papyrophile · 03/09/2024 21:57

POSH is an ancient acronym, from Raj days, when everyone travelled by ship. Port out, Starboard home, so you were always on the cooler deck. |The privilege would have been paid for.

Wallabyone · 03/09/2024 21:57

I love Disney, and my big American fridge, and an M&S food hall, and also listen to Classic FM <bows head in middle class shame>

Bleached white teeth
Being so obsessed with your flooring that it makes you anti-social to guests
Hot-tubs
Tiki/Garden Bars

Fake grass
Door Bows

Forestcantrun · 03/09/2024 21:58

Crikeyalmighty · 03/09/2024 21:59

All inclusive holidays at places where I wouldn't fancy eating much at all!
Dubai
Miller & carter
Tesla's
Expensive branded clothes with massive logos on them
Spa days that are in a bit of a crap place

Crikeyalmighty · 03/09/2024 22:00

Eating at The Ivy
Range Rovers

I drink at the Ivy but never eat there. Does that still count?

ChishiyaBat · 03/09/2024 22:00

Lwrenn · 03/09/2024 21:40

Yes the bath perls!! Bloody heck, I loved them. How I was never arrested pinching them is beyond me. Body shop was another place with lots of "minging and fingered" cosmetics wasn't it 😂

Stunt oil 😂 haha!
I've never seen any in the shops, probably because I only go aldi or use vinted 😂
I'm going to get Mr lwrenn to get me some stunt oil for my birthday now and if anyone touches it there will be bloody murder!

They were just too easy to steal😂. Oh yes for sure it was, tons of fingered and minging bits everywhere, but it smelt divine!
I saw them in matalan, b&m, m&s and maybe others last Christmas. Tell Mr Lwren to get down to one of them, if not check amazon, they sell every bloody thing else bet that's common though right😂.
