Why don't mobiles show as 'engaged' when on phone?

Several times I've been on an important call and another call has come through on my mobile.
It beeps and is very distracting and I've put the phone down on the person I'm talking to before accidentally whilst trying to stop the other person calling.

Is there a way in settings to stop this? I don't understand why it does it?

Surley if a 2nd person rings whilst you're on the phone it should just give them an engaged tone?

What phone do you have?

WetBandits · 03/09/2024 17:07

I think it depends on the network. I’m with EE and the line stays open for another call to come through. If I try to call DP and he’s already on the phone, I get a ‘user busy’ tone and his phone doesn’t tell him that I’m trying to ring. Can’t remember what network he’s with.

Yes, you can turn off call waiting, and set up divert to voicemail on busy.

How to do this will depend on your handset and your network provider.

I have a 'call settings' menu (Samsung S22 on Talk Mobile).

I am not great with tech but in the settings on my Samsung Galaxy phone I can switch 'call waiting' off and on.
When it's off, the second caller can't get through.

It's a Samsung galaxy A55

And I'm only late 30s but technologically defunct.

Ah I wondered what call waiting was in my settings.

LauderSyme · 03/09/2024 17:29

I have got the same phone as you. I went to settings and searched for call waiting using the little magnifying glass, and it came up so I moved the slider to off.

I also hate getting interrupted with a new call when I am on one already, it triggers my anxiety.

That's my issue too, I already hate phone calls, I get so put off.

Thankyou!

Yes,I used to get this, and I agree it's very distracting, especially if you're on an important call, and the person trying to call is very persistent and keeps trying! You should have a 'call waiting' option in your settings that you can switch on or off.

LauderSyme · 05/09/2024 10:58

In case you still haven't found it, first go to Settings. Then click on the magnifying glass.

You get a box to write in your search term. Type "call waiting".

Press enter/done/small magnifying glass on your keyboard. This will now find call waiting in your Supplementary services menu. Move it's slider to off.

Hope this helps 😊 It might be useful to click on each image to see it full screen.
