How do I stop waking up in the early hours?

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/09/2024 05:35

I keep waking up at 4am, its really annoying, sometimes I get another hour or so, sometimes I just toss and turn. Its been weeks if not months. I'm not particularly stressed I don't think.

What do I do? :(

Are you by any chance reaching menopause age ? This happened to me. I listen to podcasts at a really low volume to stop me thinking and sometimes I drift back to sleep but often I don't . I find not stressing about lack of sleep and just accepting it has helped me.

EigerTheTiger · 03/09/2024 05:49

Exercise, no alcohol, no naps, fresh air, early bed time consistently

EigerTheTiger · 03/09/2024 05:50

Plus no caffeine at all

This hot me like a tonne of bricks in perimenopause. I found that taking magnesium glycinate tablets helped. I wasn't entirely sure that they were working, but I ran out and my sleep is back to dreadful, so I'm pretty sure they were making a big difference.

Floofydawg · 03/09/2024 06:01

Am fucked if I know but I feel your pain.

WildFlowerBees · 03/09/2024 06:05

Magnesium citrate, since I started taking them I sleep so much better. I take 300mg. I'm peri so my sleep was awful and magnesium has helped.

happyharpy78 · 03/09/2024 06:08

Another vote for magnesium glycinate!

Andtheworldwentwhite · 03/09/2024 06:11

Can people post a link to the tablets they are taking? I never know which ones to buy.

Bluemincat · 03/09/2024 06:14

I'm the same. Started 6 weeks ago. I take magnesium glycinate and do all the rights things, no caffeine or alcohol etc. Whatever time I go to bed I just keep waking up at 4am. I'm exhausted all day but it doesn't translate into sleeping well at night.

I'm going to try to start taking a quick nap after lunch as I wfh. But I'm a light sleeper so any little noise wakes me up. Not sure it will work.

bluecomputerscreen · 03/09/2024 06:20

not stressing about it helps.

a headphone headband to listen to music or podcasts.

a kind dr told me that even lying in bed in the dark is restful. si I just do that.

I foundthe other things help somewhat but not all the time.

  • no caffeine from lunchtime onwards
  • no food at least 2 hours before bed
  • exercise late afternoon/early evening
  • magnesium before bedtime
  • my own duvet
WildFlowerBees · 03/09/2024 06:22

I take these, I know different types of magnesium for sleep might be right for you op but these have been brilliant for me.

HRT helped me when I first started it, but now I always wake up around 3 for the loo and don't really get back to sleep properly.

PigOnStiIts · 03/09/2024 06:25

Magnesium
no booze ever
weighted blanket

Onelifeonly · 03/09/2024 06:27

AceofPentacles · 03/09/2024 06:36

Magnesium gives me an upset stomach

Bananamanlovesyou · 03/09/2024 06:39

Me too it’s utterly shit. I just seem to have got used to surviving on rubbish sleep. Can’t remember the last time I woke up feeling refreshed. I dream about the days I used to sleep until 11 as a student

Groovee · 03/09/2024 06:40

On the radio yesterday. They recommended getting up and doing a task then returning to bed. I'm going to try this next time I'm awake at 3-4am.

takeabeat · 03/09/2024 06:41

Oh crikey. This is me! Today I read a book and fell back asleep. Of course the answer is - cut out all the nice fun things in life 😫

stayathomer · 03/09/2024 06:43

To add to all above, no screens up to two hours before bed, they say the rays click something active in your brain, no caffeine horrendously after 4/5 in the evening (I’m sorry!!)

MargaritaPracticallyCan · 03/09/2024 06:48

This has been me during perimenopause, though the waking can be anything from 2am. These days I rarely drink, eat well, workout 4 days a week, regular bed time, walk outdoors every day so my routine is good, but my sleep is still impacted
I now take magnesium glycinate just before bed and feel it makes a difference to me being able to get back to sleep if I wake up.
If I wake up, I listen to very quiet radio 4/podcast on earbuds (or the radio is DH is away) and that helps stop the brain churn and often I drift back off.

I'm 41 so its possible, I have to admit its not leaving me as tired as I thought it would but I feel like its starting to add up and impact my work.

No I agree that sometimes I just lay with my eyes closed feeling comfy and it does feel like a rest still. I have had work related stress before where I woke worrying about things and this is different.
