Chromebook help please

I’ve bought a chrome book but not really gotten past the start up stage.

I keep having to move between the UK and the English US keyboards as I can only get the capitals to work in the US keyboard but need to switch back to the UK keyboard to assess the keys such as @, &

Surely this can’t be right? I’ve had a look in the chrome book support pages which is how I found out re the keyboards. Some people are suggesting it’s a hard ware issue.

It’s a brand new laptop. Does anyone have a non clunky solution please? Obviously if I can’t sort it out I’ll be taking it back to the store.

When you say you can't get the capitals to work, what exactly do you mean?

Shallysally · 01/09/2024 20:09

@CaptainCabinetsTrappedInCabinets when I press search and alt, it stays in lower case. It’s only when I change to the US keyboard by changing it in settings that it changes to capitals.

So your trying to turn on the caps lock?

Do you need this function a lot? Can you not just hold ctrl and the tap the letter you want to capitalise?

Shallysally · 01/09/2024 20:42

No, chrome books have a different function than other laptops.
You have to press the search and alt keys which to be honest is a bit of a pain

I am replying to your post using my Chromebook. I am capitalising by holding down the shift key, it's not new though so maybe Chromebooks have changed?

Shallysally · 01/09/2024 21:00

Thanks @CherieBabySpliffUp I’ll give that a try.

Just shift and type.

I do this also. I find it can do most things other laptops can tbh but it has taken a lot of googling to figure it out!

Do you have to change between keyboard formats though please? I thought I was quite tech savvy but this is making my brain hurt 😂

Mine seems to be set on US English, and then when it flags up a wrong spelling for a British English spelling, it offers me the option to change to British English, so it's very easy. I dont have an issue with capitals etc though
