Car seat on plane

Evening! Just looking for some advice

I'm due to move country soon and need to take DDs car seat with me on the plane but it's a big fuck off will-fit-her-until-shes-25 - thing. I.e over the 10kg allowance budget airlines give for car seats and pushchairs.

Does anyone know if I can package it up and put it in hold luggage if I pay for another 25kg 'suitcase'?

I'm just wondering if she's close to the age where a simple booster is sufficient in which case you might consider leaving the enormous car seat behind.

Lots of airlines give you a free baggage allowance to check in items like a travel cot, pram or car seat. Worth giving your airline a call?

I was under the impression there was no weight limit for car seats, it's never been an issue for me. What seat is it? Usually you just say "car seat" and they tag it up and send you to oversize.

She's 1.5 so still a long way to go! I could buy a new car seat but I love the one we have and it's still got a lot of use left in it.

Vueling dont give you a free car seat allowance but you can substitute it for a checked bag

Interesting. It's the silver cross all size (I think that's the name) it's like 17kg and I've seen limits of 10kg when I've looking into it.

If you check it in are you going to be confident using it after it's been drop-kicked around an airport though?

We flew when DD was a similar age although it was long hall and had her car high back booster which went in the hold. We didn’t pay extra for it but brought it boxed up.

You should be absolutely fine to take your daughter’s car seat as part of the additional luggage allowance you get with a child. I’ve done this frequently and wrapped it in bubble wrap and either used the original box or a car seat travel bag that we bought from Amazon. It was questioned once by a member of check in for an easyJet flight (she didn’t believe that a car seat could weigh so much), but we just opened the bag and all was fine.

On a slightly difference note, have you checked whether your seat is legal to use in the country you are moving to?

There's no weight limit on them. I would check it in the original box, if you happen to still have it. It will protect it the best.

Another option is to leave that seat behind with grandparents so you can use it when you visit, and buy another one when you get to your destination. Then you don't have the plane hold worry. I am quite good at finding car seat deals in foreign countries if you need any help :D

Actually @BertieBotts the airline OP mentioned does (i checked when she mentioned it as i've flown a few different airlines and it's never come up so i thought she was mistaken).

If you’re travelling with jet 2 then the car seat has to weigh less than 10 kilos for it to be free. If it’s more then a fee of £12 applies. I used to work for them and this question used to come up loads. If also you plan to use it onboard it has to be cabin approved and have the cabin approved sticker attached.

Ah right sorry - in the budget airlines I've used, there is no weight limit on the car seat, but it is often confused with the limit for the cheaper/free baggage option.

There aren't a lot of under-10kg car seats on the market any more, TBH.

They (tui) let me take it along with a pushchair with no additional charge!
