Not mine, but a work colleague has an island worktop of solid wood over an island worktop with the hob etc underneath it. It slides into place. Means she can hide the hob and minimise the space used if just for eating say a cold breakfast and morning coffee, or create extra space if eating dinner, or as she says, more likely she can cook dinner while the kids sit at the extended bit (the solid wood worktop) doing homework etc. It was custom made and apparently she got the idea from the Grand Designs programme.
