Would you medicate baby reflux where symptoms aren't that bad?

I'm pretty sure my 5 week old has silent reflux but his symptoms aren't that bad - he isn't very happy being put on his back to sleep (grunts, squirms, moans and thrashes) but he usually will sort of settle eventually with white noise and swaddle, but will wake frequently. Normal for a newborn I know but he sleeps a lot more deeply and for much longer when on his tummy on a person (obviously supervised), or in a sling. We've tried co sleeping but that's no good as he's still on his back and he's no more settled that way than he is in his next2me crib . He gulps a lot while feeding, lots of hiccups, high pitched noises. However he is not generally unsettled (or no more so than your average newborn) and is feeding well (EBF) and gaining weight.

I have my 6 week check next week and unsure if I should push for his reflux to be medicated. Others with reflux seem to say their babies were consistently miserable and that's not the case with him. He will happily lie on his back for a bit if he is awake - ie on his playmat - he just doesn't want to sleep on his back, either in my bed or anything else. Just don't want him to be medicated needlessly but also don't want him to be unhappy.

Hello,

Im going through the same thing now but with a 14 week old. Can I asked what you ended up doing? And how is you LO doing now?

Alwaystired2023 · 11/01/2025 05:19

I wouldn't OP, I'd wait and see how he was over the coming weeks. My first baby had omeprazole at 18 months it was life changing, second baby at 8 weeks and it just made them constipated so I stopped it immediately and just did everything I could to help and they seemingly 'grew out of it' but interesting is sick all the time still but happy, whereas first baby was never sick but a barium swallow at 18 months showed very clearly silent reflux

No I'd really not I've just lived this have a 12 week old and didn't medicate their tummies are so tiny it's best so only give milk. Is he BF or bottle

Posted this when my baby was tiny. He's 5 months now and we chose not to medicate. I'm glad we didn't. His sleep improved bang on 8 weeks and although he's still fairly sicky he has no weight issues and is perfectly happy.
