Is Le Creuset cookware worth the price tag?

I’ve got the Le Creuset salt and pepper mills and a utensil jar (in the shell pink colourway, if anyone was wondering) which I love. I’d love to have a casserole dish and a baking dish too!

I have 3 cast iron pots in kiwi. Had them around 20 years. Love them. I'm 55 with a low level oven, and there are no issues with weight.

I completely forgot I have a roasting pan with a trivet and a griddle pan. Have used the roasting pan cos it's summer, but it will be back in use shortly looking at today's weather. The griddle pan gets dug out for steak, it was a gift and is a horrible shade of yellow

Oldraver · 01/09/2024 11:27

I had the Sainsburys dupes and while lovely they went rusty in the dishwasher. We now have Pro-Cook and OH diligently hand washes them

Le Cruset frying pan, frankly not impressed for the money, we burnt one on the induction hob before we realised you shouldn't use them on 'P'

Le Cruset eathenware dishes...love these they wash so well in the dishwaher. You sometimes think something is burnt on but it comes straight off

Le Cruset oven metal dishes thingies...non stick not as good as new and I do now use a layer of greasproof but very heavy and good quality...OH insists on hand washing

A building collection of pots and stuff, that I admit sometimes buy not knowing what I will use it for

One of the bets things I've bought are two silicon mats, they are brill for putting on the induction hob while its still hot to protect blunnim kitty paws

I buy most things form the outlet so much so that they remember me when we go in there

Chuffed to learn I am a wanker, @Bluerinsebrigade - always good to have a new label to claim.

I agree the Kitchen Aid is because it is so goddamn pretty, but I do use it 3 or 4 times a week for 20 years or more.

As for Denby - why don’t you have any? It’s pretty much bomb proof. It’s outlasted all the other crockery we’ve had over the years.

I’ve got Denby pasta bowls in imperial blue and I’m quite disappointed that the glaze looks quite scratched after only a couple of years. We do put them in the dishwasher but I expected better - the rest of our dinner service is inherited Churchill blue willow which still looks brand new. My parents’ old Denby from the 80s still looks fine though so maybe it’s gone downhill.

I think you could be right about the quality going downhill. I've got a lidded two section baking dish from the 80s ( a sort of matt finish) which is like new, but later stuff looks quite worn.

Sometimes MN is a bit discouraging to me..really does owning LC an ancient company make you a pretentious person? Same as LV also making leather goods for eons. I love my LC and also my USA copy..Cuisinart. As for lifting? After 40? Yikes I plan on lifting lots of things until I’m 80 and my ancestors indicate I will be doing it. I bought a kitchen aid last Christmas for myself. I use it to bake cakes primarily. I’ve always been a pie person but I became interested in cakes and they are so very pretty on the holiday desert table. My DD likes staub. Better cook than me and she is tiny hefting them out of the oven no problem. We buy new used Tjmaxx garage sales wherever. My Dsis who is a champion chef and shopper carried a small but heavy Dutch oven LC bought at a boot sale in her carry on she was determined to get it across the USA where it’s now living a very busy life. And we are not pretentious but do like quality

abracadabra1980 · 01/09/2024 16:16

Far too heavy for me. I've no idea why anyone would enjoy using them for this reason.

Lavenderandbrown · 01/09/2024 16:19

Seemingly I'm a pretentious wanker too then.

I have a few cast iron pieces. I don't get why people are saying they are too heavy. Although I don't have the saucepans so I'm not boiling up potatoes and draining the water off. Is this what others mean ? Or did you have the mega big size ones?

Although I've bought mine new, I've never paid full price for any of them. There are always mark downs like when a colour is being discontinued. I also live near a shop that sell seconds, so like for eg, the lid on my casserole colour isn't blended perfectly. That really doesn't matter to me.

I have had my oldest one about 8 years of so and I still class it as new.

I didn't realise if you owned LC you are put into a pretentious category. My view is that I will never need to buy another to replace it. Why is that being pretensious?

Does anyone recommend a foolproof way to clean the outside?? I have light grey cast iron griddle, and the outside of it gets horrifically mucky somehow, with brown and black splatters after cooking. I’ve never put it in the dishwasher as I always thought you couldn’t. No issues cleaning the inside, but it just takes so much effort to keep the outside looking good. Any top tips? What am I missing?!

I soak mine in the sink for a while, sometimes overnight and then throw it in the dishwasher with everything else. The outside looks like new.

Ilovechees3 · 01/09/2024 17:27

I have had my pan set for nearly 40 years, I love them. My daughter has had my big casserole dish and lasagne dish as they weren’t being used. The large saucepan when full is getting too heavy but rarely used.
My daughter wants them so will do swap with her in the future.

I have quite a bit of Denby, as I love that the ordinary plates and bowls can be used in the oven. It always goes in the dishwasher (with Lidl tablets). About half of my collection is Imperial blue and seconds, we've had no issues with the glaze or scratching, but for some reason the breakfast bowls have chipped. Keep meaning to contact Denby. I love that they are still made in Britain too, rather than the many Chinese copies that are on the market.

Is this a joke? I'm 60, I'm way past menopause and my joints are fine! I've got 3 le creuset, 2 casseroles and one wide lidded pan, got them as wedding presents 35 years ago, use them a lot and have no problems lifting them whatsoever, I wouldn't be without them.

It's the lifting Le Creuset that keeps us strong!

Another pretentious wanker with multiple casseroles, an entire Denby dinner service, plus a Wedgwood one, and an Aga. All well over 20 years old, still good as new.

But do you have a Kitchen Aid mixer? 😉

No, but I do have a Kenwood Cooking Chef! 🫣

On the back of this I got a roasting dish for £25 from eBay! Looking forward to cooking toad in the hole and making gravy.

coatfromjamesdean · 14/09/2024 18:49

I have two, while theyre lovely, like others I am struggling with the heaviness of them lately and they've been confined to the cupboard, I'm tempted to get rid of them.

Hello Le Creuset people I have a question:

What is the name of the Le Creuset that's shallow and wide like a frying pan but had handles and a lid like the casserole dish? Lots of TV cooks/chefs use them. When I check websites I'm never sure about the pictures/proportions compared to what I've seen on TV so I don't know if I'm buying the right one! And I don't want to have to lug one home from a shop (I don't drive).

I thought it was just mine that looked like that, I have the green version of Denby so similar to yours and the glaze is all grey scratched, mine are probably about 5-10 years old, washed in dishwasher, use mid range M&S cutlery, I am quite disappointed but whenever I have googled about it no one else has mentioned it.

Is it perhaps the Signature Shallow Casserole?.

We get them in a 26cm and 32cm.

JoanThursday · 16/11/2024 16:43

Yes, the shallow casserole I think? I have the bigger one - I love it. Must use it 2 to 3 times a week at least.

Thank you! I think when I looked I could only see the smaller one which didn't seem to be the tv one! It's the 32cm one I'm after! It's going on my Xmas list! 😊

setpieces · 16/11/2024 17:42

Edit: it's 26 or 30cm I think
